Wow, I hope that girl will be okay. For someone who's from the area it isn't suprising to hear where the plane is from. I've flown out of Grand Junction many times and I've never heard good things about Kempton Air. That plane must've been loaded pretty heavy though to still have some power, and not be able to stay aloft at sea level. I lost partial power in a normally aspirated 172 one afternoon taking off from an airport at 5200 MSL and was able to get it back to the airport.
I guess just the fact that the engine was still turning when the plane landed made me question the pilot's decision making, and wonder if it could have been avoided...but I wasn't there so I can't say that I wouldn't have done the same. Just sounded like a case of "get-down itis" when I read the article the first time in the Denver paper.
