Taxiing plane clips parked jet at Fla. airport
Published: Today
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say no one was injured when two airplanes got into a sort of fender-bender at a Florida airport.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue says a taxiing Spirit Airlines Airbus A-320 clipped a US Airways Airbus A-320. The US Airways jet was parked Monday night in a remote area away from the gate at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Spirit spokeswoman Misty Pinson says a flight from Atlanta was taxiing to its gate when its left wing clipped the parked plane. Pinson says all 162 passengers on board got off at the gate as normal, and the plane returned to service.

Authorities say the US Airways aircraft was left with a gash in its tail section.

Firefighters were called to the scene, but there was no fuel leak from either aircraft.

The interesting thing is that the pilot on the Spirit Airbus SAID on the ground frequency that it was really tight back there and the controller should take other aircraft a different way. Then he clipped the plane.

I believe the DC-9 had some sort of hydraulic failure (brakes and/or steering), if I remember correctly.

There have been far too many airplanes clipping other airplanes recently. How much longer are we going to stand for this? It HAS to stop...NOW. I propose a ban on wingspans of 75' or more. There needs to be a limit on the number of airplanes parked per 1,000 square feet, and no more than one airplane moving on the ramp at a time. Additionally, taxi lanes should be no less than 500 feet apart.

Congress needs to act now before any more innocent metal is bent.

I think my attempt at humor didn't translate well

I figured it was some sort of hydraulic/mechanical failure.

Yes, I believe they landed with one hydraulic system failure and after clearing the runway, out of habit shutdown the engine with the good system.

My first reaction is "oops", but then I thought: What if they had an engine ( the engine with the good system) problem/failure while still in flight?
