My understanding is that they shut it down but the engine was either a) windmilling or b) had structural damage outside the core that was vibrating in the airflow.

The part that I did find interesting is that the captain asked the passengers to pray. Twice.

One of the jobs of the PIC is to promote calm in times of chaos. Asking pax to pray does not promote calm.

"Folks we have an issue with one of engines. You might have noticed the vibration. Although this may be uncomfortable, we are ok. We will give you any upates as we get them. "

And, yet, on a European flight to Athens while in severe turbulence, the pilot came over the intercom and told passengers to review the safety material because he had serious doubts that we were going to survive it.

Not kidding.
 
Note to self. Stay off airliners in or around Malaysia. I believe this is the same airline where the pilots have issues flying in IFR conditions.
