I was an ATA at LAX tracon back in the 80's. At that facility (which is no more), I did the arrival ATIS, gave IFR pre-takeoff clearances to the the towers at HHR, TOA, and SMO, and processed flight data strips. I also made food runs sometimes during lunch.

It was a pretty cool job and one that was supposed to lead to a good shot at becoming a full fledged air traffic controller. I'm glad I did it for a short time to learn the "other" side of the system.

At LAS, I'd guess you'd do the ATIS, work the clearnance delivery freq, and process flight data strips.

Sweet.
What exactly do you mean by "process flight data strips"
I know what they are, but what would you do with them?

Each facility is different and this was back in the 80's, so things might have changed. But my job was to take the departure strips out of the printer, write a letter code one them to highlight the SID, sort the strips based on which controller station they would go to, and deliver them to the controller.
