Sad to hear; hope to hear good news about the pilot soon.

Met several of those guys in UKI - every one seemed like a stand up guy doing a tough job.

Also, the 22 S-2s are grounded temporarily:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California's fleet of air tankers was temporarily grounded Wednesday after one crashed in Yosemite National Park, killing the pilot.
The grounding left the park service with a single contract helicopter assisting firefighters battling a blaze that had grown overnight to 210 acres and led to the evacuation of 60 homes in Foresta, on the famed park's western boundary.

RIP. I called one of my buds at the Hollister base. Thankfully, it wasn't him. They're all very shaken. This hurts. Personally, I'm getting a little freaked. For me, this is the sixth friend to go west in under two years. I'm thinking this has got be getting to the extreme of the bell curve. Damn.

Sorry to hear that, thoughts and best wishes your way.

On a related note, are all the CDF S-2s turbines now, or are there still round-engine recips still in use?
