Again? FAA investigates another Air Canada landing mix-up at SFO

I've been told to go around when I clearly knew the guy would clear before I broke the threshold. I don't know what atc tolerance is (please tell me) but it's definitely more conservative than mine. I wonder if this guys radio problems where because of a similar frustration that resulted in one of our deadly attitudes?
In my opinion the location of the airport has a lot to do with their comfort level. I was told to go around at some airport in Michigan a while back on a 1 mile final when the airplane in front of me was about 100 feet from exiting. At O'Hare.....well ya'll know about that. At my home airport SNA theyre less conservative with 121 guys because they know they've got their ish together, but if its a GA guy they make them go around very early. I remember taking off at LAX in 2006 when 25L was under construction. We were given a takeoff clearance as a Delta 737 was still on the takeoff roll.

Sometimes you have to evaluate if its better to just land than to go around if the guy in front of you is taking off. Because then you have two planes within close proximity of each other going in the same direction and one can't see the other.

That's all local procedures, it's not because 121 pilots have their "ish" together. Something to do with the runway length, and distance between departing aircraft.

Again? FAA investigates another Air Canada landing mix-up at SFO

Excerpts:
  • Just three months after an Air Canada plane nearly landed on a crowded SFO taxiway, the FAA has launched another investigation into why a second passenger jet from that airline Sunday ignored a San Francisco air traffic controller’s repeated order to abort a landing.
  • . . . as the plane approached, an air traffic controller repeated six straight times for the Air Canada pilot to execute a “go-around” . . .
They speak Canadian, eh?!?

You think that's bad? ... I revenued on a Mesa CRJ recently. Ground speed from 7 miles out to the threshold varied from 138 to 110... multiple times. Multiple significant thrust adjustments. No wind. After finally getting on the ground, the second leg had no crew. Got time to spare? Go by air.

Do varying tolerances really matter? If Tower tells you to go around, go the eff around. 'Nuff said.

depends where you’re landing. Some of the busier airports have systems in place where if the alarm goes off you have to send the guy on final around no questions asked. I worked at a slower facility where we didn’t have that and some people may or may not have cheated a little depending on who else wash in the tower cab. Since there’s no asde to prove the guy you’re landing in front of wasn’t clear of the runway despite the fact that he’s 8000’ down the runway and 90% off (and will be clear before you’re even close) this also assumes we are talking about cat 3 aircraft
