ADS-B by 2020 or you don't get to play in Class A, B or C

Re: ADS-B by 2020 or you don't get to play in Class A, B or

Well that should be cheap.

I am buying stock as we speak

(I am being sarcastic for the know-it-alls that will point out it is illegal for me to own stock in an aviation company.)

By then it probably will be. Cheap, that is. First adopters never get the best deal.

Like it's kept the price of transponders or radios high? Well, for sure a transponder costs more than it should but anything TSO'd for an airplane does. I don't think this will be any different.

transponders/radios are OLD technology and like you said transponders still cost a lot. This is the new stuff and it is a mandatory purchase I doubt you'll see too much of a price drop until after 2020.

Re: ADS-B by 2020 or you don't get to play in Class A, B or

As someone who's been flying in ABS-B equiped aircraft for the past year, I really enjoy all my real-time traffic and weather displays.

It's some good stuff.

I don't think anyone is arguing that the technology isn't good, but it is just going to cost an arm and a leg for folks to comply due to: 1)it will be required and 2)it is a piece of avionics, which means it will be subject to who knows how many technical orders and will have a rather large amount of insurance and other legal costs embedded in its price.

2020? We'll be lucky if we get past 2012... :X

I've got some bad news for you; in case you didn't already notice, owning and operating an airplane for personal use is already prohibitively expensive. Adding $3,000 for a transponder that will work with the ADS-B system to the mix isn't going to change that.

You'll need a stand-alone transponder as well as a ADS-B-out system as a minimum.
