ADD & the Dispatcher

Hi Everyone-

I just learned about the dispatch role as a career. Never knew something like this existed.

I'm interested in the possibility of diving into this field but I do have a question.

Can you do this if you're on Adderall or any other ADD medication? I'm assuming that if the company had you do a drug test, these meds would show up and you'd be terminated. I've searched around but I can't find any info pertaining to dispatchers.

Can anyone in this field shed some light on this? I'd hate to invest the time/money pursing this only to find out it is a lost cause.

Thanks!

As long as you're prescribed the drugs. No problem.

There's no medical required for a dispatch license. As CPZ said, as long as you have a doctor's prescription there is no problem. Another question to consider, is your ADD completely controlled by the medication? Because paying close attention for long stretches is part of the job.

Disclose it when you do your prehire whiz quiz and you should be fine. It gets a bit more sketchy when you are trying to get pilot ratings and would need a medical waiver from OKC,but since a medical isn't required for ADX you should be okay

If you can pass a Class 3 you shouldn't worry about this field.

(you don't need to have a medical anyway.)

Is disclosing it required?

Not sure if it's required...but since Adderal and Ritalin are controlled substances I'd rather be up front about it when taking the pee test versus having to address it later

If you do disclose, I would only do so to the drug/alcohol person performing the drug test. Even if you don't disclose at the time of the test, the testing company will contact you directly if there's a problem to see if there was a reason that you had a positive result for a substance (such as a prescription, in this case.)

You have to disclose it to the MRO and provide proof of a prescription when you get called for a positive test. It gets reported back to your employer as a "negative" result. You can tell the collector, but they will tell you they can't help and to wait for the call.

They DO NOT TEST for adderal. If they tested for prescription drugs, the list would be so huge they would never pay for all of that.
And you do not have to disclose anything.

But as one person stated...this job is not easy when it comes to sitting for long periods and remaining focused on the tasks. You could end up taking a lot more of the script than you need or want to. You should really try to visit an airline ops centre and find out more. This gig is not for everyone. (oh god here comes the hate mail....) But realistically, how many major airlines are there? (assuming one wants to end up there). Lets say, there are 9, and that is counting Spirit and Ali-giante. Nine places to work... Nine shots at something...Nine tries to hit it big and get the big salary.... I mean if you LOVE AIRPLANES, WEATHER, FARs and peeing in a coke bottle...then this is it dude!!! I love it. everyday. And I can go out on the roof and watch our birds on short final and smell the jetA. So I took my chance and it worked out. with lots of blood sweat and tears.

I can attest there were plenty of tears. lmao
