Acting PIC on a multi training flight

If you don’t have a multi rating before starting a multi CPL course, is there such a thing as "Acting PIC" when flying with an instructor for your multi commercial?

For example, you are "acting PIC" to complete the requirements like 300 nm x/c, 5 hours night, 2 hours VFR day etc.

I have not heard of that before, but the regs can be interpreted quite widely sometimes. So who knows!?

Having recently completed my Commercial Multi rating without a previous multi rating, there's no PIC time loggable until you pass the check ride. The check ride itself is loggable PIC time, however.

Ok, I ask because some schools quote multi CPL courses as though you need your multi rating. And the regs makes it seem like you need to be multi rated before you complete your multi CPL training requirements.

hmm Interesting, you learn something new everyday

(Please keep in mind, I'm referring to multi initial commercial. Not Single CPL first, multi second as an add on.)

For the multi initial commercial you do need to meet PIC requirements.

§ 61.129 Aeronautical experience.

(4) 10 hours of solo flight time in a multiengine airplane or 10 hours of flight time performing the duties of pilot in command in a multiengine airplane with an authorized instructor (either of which may be credited towards the flight time requirement in paragraph (b)(2) of this section), on the areas of operation listed in §61.127(b)(2) of this part that includes at least—

(i) One cross-country flight of not less than 300 nautical miles total distance with landings at a minimum of three points, one of which is a straight-line distance of at least 250 nautical miles from the original departure point. However, if this requirement is being met in Hawaii, the longest segment need only have a straight-line distance of at least 150 nautical miles; and

(ii) 5 hours in night VFR conditions with 10 takeoffs and 10 landings (with each landing involving a flight with a traffic pattern) at an airport with an operating control tower.

As the above post mentions, you CAN do the 10 hours in the multi, not log it as PIC, but complete the requirement.

You must have a Multi-PVT to be and log PIC. The requirments state either as pic (rated or solo) or "acting as PIC" which is done with your instructor. Since your not rated in the multi and its a snowballs chance you'll get to take the twin solo...you fall under "acting as PIC".

Make a separate column "acting/performing as pic as per 61.129 (B)(4)" during those flights which require PIC time. Do not log it under the regular PIC time as it isnt. Also when you do IACRA you count it under the PIC solo and solo XC.

I guess the key rest in this section;

(4) 10 hours of solo flight time in a multiengine airplane or 10 hours of flight time performing the duties of pilot in command in a multiengine airplane with an authorized instructor (either of which may be credited towards the flight time requirement in paragraph (b)(2) of this section), on the areas of operation listed in §61.127(b)(2) of this part that includes at least --

performing the duties of pilot in command in a multiengine airplane with an authorized instructor

Guess this could be interpreted as "acting pic"

Usually the term Acting PIC is used to establish the actual Pilot in Command of and aircraft. I have heard it used when say an instructor is the acting PIC, but the student is logging PIC as the sole manipulator of the controls. The acting PIC would be the actual Pilot in Command of the aircraft.

As far as the Multi goes, its not PIC time, but anywhere in the remarks or what not you can log it as Perfroming duties of PIC.

You don't have to have a multi private, or a solo endorsement to meet the requirement, but you would to be "acting PIC". That's at least the way I see it. I have signed off 4 inital Comm MEL certificates, and not one of them had a minute of PIC logged, They had time perfroming the duties of PIC and the examiners have never made a peep about it.
