Accepting gifts

So I flew a single engine bugsmasher yesterday for the first time in 6 years. Wow, what a trip.

Anyway, I almost did something very stupid and thanks to a tower controller who was paying attention the only thing that is damaged is my pride.

I want to send up some homemade cookies or something for them. Its a GA field and I've been up to the tower before, but I just wanted to make sure..

Can controllers accept gifts? When I was up there a few months ago they were telling me about some kind of free food that a local business was sending up but a supervisor put a stop to that, something about federal employees accepting gifts.

Anyway, any controllers on here could you chime in? Can I send up a box of cookies or something?

Yes, they can accept gifts. They can accept a meal up to (I think) $20, and something is buzzing around in my memory that says that is a once a year allowable event. If the supervisor put a stop to it, that was most likely because it was exceeding the allowable frequency.

A couple times in my life I have written thank you letters to the controllers of a facility. In the most recent one, I just happened to be in that control tower a year after the event. We were just talking and I mentioned that event and one of the controllers said "was that you who wrote the thank you letter". Everyone chimed in and you would have thought I had done something great. I assume that is testament to the fact that thank you letters are rarely written today.

So, a gift that costs a small amount of money will probably not be an issue, but a thank you letter that takes time to write will always be accepted and appreciated.

what about a nice bottle of whiskey?

I think "nice bottle of whiskey" and "under $20" are mutually exclusive. Other than that, it's the ideal gift for any occasion. Weddings, divorces, births, deaths, bar mitzvahs, mid-life crises.
