ACARS of the Day

Had a ferry pilot like that
"Down at 1000 feet, good reception. Over ABC eastbound, how's it looking?"
"Ok next 15 miles, then fly 040 for another 20, land at XYZ and call me"

121.357 Airborne weather radar equipment requirements.

(c)(2) "If the airborne weather radar becomes inoperative en route, the airplane must be operated in accordance with the approved instructions and procedures specified in the operations manual for such an event."

What did the OPS manual say?

Pretty sure that even if the weather radar was still working we as dispatchers would need to still alert them to weather down the way along their route, but that is just what I have always been taught.

STL/DCA
ARE THERE ANY THUNDERSTORMS AHEAD OF US? WX RADAR FAILED. PLEASE ADVISE.

I guess there's always the window!

Time for a "ride-a-long"!

The same one I would make if I had a radar that crapped the bed after takeoff. The trick is the earth is curved and by the time you see something, it might be far too late to cicumnavigate it, like a huge squall line.

I will tell you however, that there are some dispatchers that will pull out a canned flight plan through an area of convective weather and (a) expect you to be a 'pathfinder' without telling you or (b) expect that you have the magic onboard equipment to pick your way through the maze when the maze has no solution.

Most of my mobile phone minutes are spend with dispatch and/or maintenance and I'm unapologetic about it.

Oh, I know I'm on "The List" :) It's ok, that's what the money is for! Ha!

For some of us, we have to send our flight plans 5-6 hours before the flight, including domestically. The BEST thing we have to see if any convection will be out there is the TCF (CCFP) chart since the radar would be pretty out of date by the time they'd fly through it. It also doesn't help that we don't have ACARS or Sat Phone.

That's terrrrrble. So you send the FP and then update the weather before the flight or how do you get up to date relevant information to the crew?

We do a phone briefing. We send the appropriate SIG chart obviously but stuff changes so much in 6 hours that you never know. We almost have to rely on ATC to feed them through unless we route hundreds of miles out of the way. Sometimes, we have to though and there's no other choice.

Here is one from a few years ago - yes this is an actual acars message and yes the flight did divert. I did have to remove some bits of information.

at about 60W...

male passenger, complaining about pain and requesting medical assistance.

the issue is an extended erection for about 6 hours. was given aspirin for pain. medical history of this issue and sickle cell. xxxxxxx recommended xxxxxx for the pain and oxygen until a decision can be made about diverting.
