Thought I'd clarify a couple of points about ABX. Actually, DHL bought Airborne Express but, due to foreign ownership rules, separated BOTH airlines from the company. So now we have ABX (former Airborne Express airline) and AStar (former DHL Airways) both flying as independent ACMI's for DHL. There was talk of a merger between the two in the beginning but that seems unlikely now.
ABX is a good place to work with excellent pay, benefits and good schedules. The numbers on APC are accurate. Unfortunately the airline has been shrinking since the DHL buyout so there is no movement. We do have pilots on furlough and some of the PFE's and Second Officers may be furloughed this summer. There are too many variables (767's coming/DC8's going/DHL success/age 65 retirement) to make even a guess as to when or if we'll be hiring again.
Speaking of OLD, I interviewed at DHL Airways in 86! I decided I didn't want to fly a Metro, ironically I ended up flying 5000 hrs in the Metro for somebody else! I also interviewed with Evergreen (who was flying the UPS contract) that same summer. Those guys went through some major headaches but it obviously turned out VERY well for some. Point being that I am no genius when it comes to career choices! Given the state of the industry, though, there is MUCH worse than being a gray-haired FO at ABX, so no complaints here.
