Abx air

Hey guys, I just noticed at Airline Pilot Central that abx's top pay is $239. Is this a good company to work for and are the benefits are as good as other Big freight companies. Is is as hard to get in as fdx or ups? thanks

The ABX guarantee is only 65 hours. That's a good thing cause they probably have cleaner week on, week off, schedules than we do with a 75 hour guarantee. In the end, we work more hours but I'd be our W2's would be similar.

ABX has some guys on furlough and got bought out by Astar, so it's hard to predict the future of how the old DHL and old ABX will be combined. Since it's a smaller pilot group, I'd say it's even more important to know somebody to get hired there. There was a time, though, when ABX wasn't that hard to get on with. I had an interview offer back in 1988 with DHL but turned it down cause I had just got a job flying Convairs. Probably not one of my smarter choices but things worked out in the end.

1988? Damn I won't even mentioned how old I was in 1988. Don- your an old fart! Unless of course you'll get me a job with UPS, then your a young, dashing, James Bond looking kinda guy!

Don't forget to mention brilliant, and a great humanitarian. :)

"Don- your an old fart!"

I got carded at Hooters the other day, then I saw on the menu they card everyone for alcohol...

My first week as a Capt I had the limo driver say to my face "Let me know when the PIC shows up and we can go". I just laughed a little inside thinking he was looking for the grizzled old Capt type, which I'm not.

Later in the week, my F/O's says "you're only half a Capt". I looked at him funny and he points out one of my epaulets has three stripes and the other has four. Guess I got them mixed up when I put them on the shirt before I left home. That was pretty funny.

How hard is to get in at FedEx? I'm working at one of their hubs right now and in the back of my mind I'm thinking a few years down the road it might help me to get in, haven't researched it yet though. Have to say its an excellent company and I'm proud to work for them. So about how many hours are the min for a 727 flight engineer job?

Thought I'd clarify a couple of points about ABX. Actually, DHL bought Airborne Express but, due to foreign ownership rules, separated BOTH airlines from the company. So now we have ABX (former Airborne Express airline) and AStar (former DHL Airways) both flying as independent ACMI's for DHL. There was talk of a merger between the two in the beginning but that seems unlikely now.

ABX is a good place to work with excellent pay, benefits and good schedules. The numbers on APC are accurate. Unfortunately the airline has been shrinking since the DHL buyout so there is no movement. We do have pilots on furlough and some of the PFE's and Second Officers may be furloughed this summer. There are too many variables (767's coming/DC8's going/DHL success/age 65 retirement) to make even a guess as to when or if we'll be hiring again.

Speaking of OLD, I interviewed at DHL Airways in 86! I decided I didn't want to fly a Metro, ironically I ended up flying 5000 hrs in the Metro for somebody else! I also interviewed with Evergreen (who was flying the UPS contract) that same summer. Those guys went through some major headaches but it obviously turned out VERY well for some. Point being that I am no genius when it comes to career choices! Given the state of the industry, though, there is MUCH worse than being a gray-haired FO at ABX, so no complaints here.
