Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields

Great site! Very intersting! In Tampa, there used to be an airport in the area where Busch Gardens now sits. When you fly over Busch Gardens and look down, you can still see some of the runways.

It was called Henderson Field. Used during WWII.

This is what it was after it's closure in the 50's (the Busch Brewery can be seen in the upper right:

Here `tis as of 2000:

Good stuff.

Very cool pics!!!

You'd think that they would completely destroy the runway....well, maybe not...

OK, so I don't know what I'm talking about...

Lloyd. This one will crack you up. (Only in TN, right?

)

Not only did they leave the runway complete with its markings, but they built a freakin' HIGHSCHOOL smack in the middle. I can just see Jethro in his Stearman smackin' into this thing. Check it out:

"What the Hey-ell is they-at??"

Hey Ready2fly that actually looks better maintained than some of the strips down here in S Florida!! Old Okeechobee comes to mind! Charlotte Cnty runway 9

LOL

that's a sweet site! Krist Port airport used to be across the road from where I live! I didn't even know that an airport was there. The old building and hanger are now an auto shop, but it still has the control tower and whatnot. I get my car fixed there!

I never thought about it being an airplane hanger before, but it makes perfect sense now that i look at it in a different perspective.

you can see the control tower from WWII era on top there. very cool!

Andrau Airpark in Houston was no more than a mile or two away from my house. My wife remembers going there with her grandpa to watch planes and have lunch at the cafe.

But, now I have PF Chang's, Chipotle, Lowe's, Wal-Mart, Chik-Fil-A, Kohls, Oshman's, BW-3's, HEB (grocery for you non-Texans) just a hop, skip, and a jump from my house! Oh, and my property value has increased 70% in the past 3 years. Which is better?

I certainly don't agree that all airport closures are necessary, but in some cases it's a win-win.

Here's one I've been on....in a car!

Walt Disney World airstrip

Off to the left is World Drive. Right off the bottom edge of the pic is the toll plaza for the Magic Kingdom. That faint line b/w the highway and the runway is the monorail track, and that parking lot at the far left is Magic Kingdom parking. If you ever drive to the Contemporary resort, you'll pass a sign for "bus parking" about half-way between the toll plaza and the hotel. My wife and I turned down it late at night to see what was there. As soon as I saw the big yellow X and the absence of trees, I knew what we were sitting on.

I KNEW there used to be an airstrip there!!!

When I was 12, my first ride in a Cessna included flying over Disney and I distinctly remember seeing an airstrip and thinking we were going to land there. (didn't happen).

But, the airstrip does not appear on any sectionals any more.

Cool. Thanks for solving that brain fart, kellwolf!!

I have a sectional with it on there, but it's listed as a pvt strip. It's from 2001, though. I think after 9/11 they stopped putting it on there. It's listed as Lake Buena Vista airport, I think. It's in (or was in) MSFS as EPCOT Center.

Awesome site !!!
I have heard from older pilots about Flushing Airport in its heyday. Pretty cool considering it's only a mile east of LGA.

I can only imagine the GA mayhem that would ensue if it were re-opened. The site says that it is now slowly turning back into swampland. Such a shame.

I noticed all the boats are missing from the marina, did that close down as well?

Hey are they actually still building GA airports or are they just steadly decreasing in number?

Holy cow! Check out 17FL (Greystone) it's a 7500x360ft paved private rwy that used to be the home of 3 privately owned 707s! It's still around and it's being turned into an aviation comunity.
