AA internship

Hello people. I have the chance to do an internship with American airlines at LGA in the flight ops department(no flying). I have no idea whats going on in there and i was wandering if it will be worth to do it. Did anybody do something like that? Is it interesting? What usually interns do in such departments?
thank you very much

I had a friend who did an internship with Skywest similar to that. For the most part I think he basically shadowed dispatch.

Some of the bennies he got were jumpseating privileges and a guaranteed interview for a pilot position once he got the minimums. Don't know what AA will offer, but seeing as they're not a regional, I wouldn't expect them to offer a pilot job right away.

At least give it a shot. I would jump at a chance to make friends at a legacy, sure it would put your application in the 'read' pile if you were a good worker. Good luck.

P>S> Remeber me, Travis, if you make it :)

Here is a thread about another major's intern program:

Also this thread is about American's and although it's from 2004, it looks like StoneCold went through the program so you might be able to get some information from him.

I know someone who did the AA internship and enjoyed it very much.

Though an internship with SkyWest could get you lowered minimums as was mentioned above, an internship with a major air carrier might someday get you a career.

Go do it. At very least, you'll have seen and experienced the chaos that keeps an airline operation going...it's very interesting and mind boggling at the same time.

The other thing you'll take away from it is the connections. People remember people. Even though you may only have 200 hours now, when you're ready for a job at American, the people you had contact with will remember you. I have a few friends who interned at Continental early during college.....They got jobs there as pilots 5 years later with no 121 PIC time.......

You'll also probably be able to jumpseat places (in the front) and connect with the people who are doing what you want to eventually do....it gives you a lot of valuable insight into what you're getting into.....
