A 'severe' near miss collision at CVG

A \'severe\' near miss collision at CVG

Officials categorize runway incursions on a severity level of "A" through "D". An "A" incursion is the most severe, and officials said without further investigation, the incident at CVG has the markings of an "A" level incursion.

Yikes! Anyone know what planes, what airlines were involved?

Re: A \'severe\' near miss collision at CVG

Brings back memories of sitting in the right seat of a 737, holding short of 18R/36L near it's intersection with 9/27 (we had landed on 27).

I watched as a Com Air Saab 340 and a Delta DC-9 almost collided at the intersection of the runways as both rolled out on landing. (The Saab had been cleared to land and hold short of 27). The only thing that saved it was the 9 captain saw the Saab in time to stand on the brakes and slow enough to go behind him. Still gives me the willies.

That was probably 18 years ago and they still push the envelope at CVG.

Funny, my 10-9 for CVG says "CVG does not utilize LAHSO operations". However, it should be noted we should all be on the lookout for runway incursions at any time. I'm always at my toes at LGA and BOS with all those simultaneous operations on intersecting runways. It can get really sporting sometimes ... especially as CLOSE as they cut it regularly at LGA (as in a departure rolling through the intersection as I cross the numbers close!).

Hey FL, do you guys turn all of your lights on when you're 'position and hold' on the runway?

Re: A \'severe\' near miss collision at CVG

Checklist calls for them all to go on when cleared in to position, Doug, but some guys will keep *some* of them off to avoid blinding people at night. A few people will use one switch (a strobe or taxi light) as a "cleared for takeoff" reminder. Other than that, yeah, they should all be coming on when taking the runway, whether in position or cleared to go.

Yes, but what they do is try to get crews to commit to or accept a clearance to turn off by a certain intersection as they are rolling out. If they hear an affirmative response they will clear the holding aircraft for takeoff. I wonder if they tried it with someone who wasn't familiar? I always was alert departing or arriving CVG on either of those crossing runways.
