Hello folks, what a wonderful site, anyway, I will be graduating about a month from now...March 16th 2009. I am in South FLA. and would like to begin work as an entry level A&P. I would really like to work for an airline...major/regional. I would prefer to remain here in South FLA. if at all possible...wife & 5 kids. Do you guys think that this is possible? or will I have to relocate? Please... any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Again...what an awsome site....Thanks

Unless your willing to go to the Northeast or CA a job with a major airline is pretty much out of the picture. Many of the majors still have guys on furlough and about the only cities I think you could hired off the street are LAX, SFO, JFK, EWR, LGA, DCA, BWI, ORD.

Even with the economy in the toilet I believe the regionals are still hiring. I know as of last month ASA was still hiring mechs in ATL.

As far as Florida jobs working for a 3rd party MRO is probably about it. There's Commercial Jet Inc. (I think that's their name) in Miami. Pemco in Tampa. If you are willing to go to North FL there's TIMCO in Lake City and Flightstar in Jacksonville. Also check out Sikorsky in West Palm Beach they sometimes have entry level positions.

Nowings,

Looks like a few regionals are hiring. Express Jet, American Eagle, ASA, Piedmont, Republic. I did not see any openings in South Fl, but it sure would beat working for a third party repair station.

Nowings,

Welcome to the site.

My advice would be to try to gain employment at a 3rd party maintenance facility before trying to land a job with the airlines (although trying never hurts). Some of the places fadec mentioned are excellent places to really learn commercial jet aircraft inside and out. You'll have a better understanding of aircraft systems, structures, and avionics. Mainly because you tear down an aircraft to almost bare bones and then reassemble it when the work is complete.

I first started out at a 3rd party MRO. The experience was invaluable. When I was ready to move on to the airlines, I had very little trouble transitioning onto aircraft I hadn't worked on before. I have seen people come into the airlines with little or no experience and struggle to grasp the work they were trying to accomplish. Plus you'll work with confidence once you do land that airline job.

One last bit of info, with your level of experience, you are more likely to get hired on by a 3rd party MRO than with an airline. If you looking to start working right away, this might be the route you should take.

That's my advice. Hope it helps you out.

That is a good route. There are several 3rd party MRO's there. Pemco and AAR are there and you can see if they are hiring. Check Airliners magazine because they may have some job openings in there for South Florida.

The way the economy is right now, you might need a career change. I'm working as an A&P in Houston, TX and I know more than one mechanic who left aviation. Try a regional airline. Colgan Air is hiring, although signing on might be akin to climbing from a life raft onto a sinking ship. :(
