To get paid royalty from oil and gas wells you have to own a percentage of the minerals under the land. Just because you own the surface does not mean that you own the oil, gas, rocks, etc. below the surface.
Also, oil companies do not have to pay the landowner damages from drilling on their land even if they are bulldozing active crop land. Although, most oil/gas companies and the landowner will come to an agreement as to what the land is worth and what should be paid for damages and roads to get to the well. It's just part of staying in good relations with the surface owner.
And these Bakken wells won't be putting out these kind of production numbers for all that long. The amount of oil produced from each well can drop by as much as 50% in a single year.
