747 gear warning on landing

I would presume if everything looked good on approach from their point of view - they want to know the reason because if there is any risk of loss of control they might vector them around a different way, rather than put them over a heavily populated area. It would also explain why they were so pushy!

AIM 5-3-3 section 1(d)

?

5-3-3. Additional Reports
a. The following reports should be made to ATC or FSS facilities without a specific ATC request:
1. At all times.

(d) When approach has been missed. (Request clearance for specific action; i.e., to alternative airport, another approach, etc.)

I still say it's because they're British.
