61.87(n) 90 day endorsement student question

I don't think it really specifies but good luck trying to argue that one down the road if something happens.

It does refer to the ground portion as knowledge and the flight portion as flight training though.

I am a CFI and I don't know if I would feel comfortable going 90days without flying and then taking off solo for a flight. I would probably want someone in there to watch me for a flight. That is just me though, you may have a super student on your hands there. One might say a cheap super student?

It means flight training, because the instructor is supposed to determine that the student is proficient in the prescribed maneuvers and procedures and the make and model to be flown.

Training means anything necessary for the student to safely and successfully solo the airplane. Obviously a student needs both ground and flight training for solo flight. Examples include ground training in the limitations of a student pilot, and the flight training is obvious.

Says A student Pilot may not operate an aircraft in solo flight unless......

Does not say.... A CFI must give a student pilot training in the past 90 days.

However 61.87(p) Outlines your responsibilities as a CFI

within 90 days you need to have given 'training', does that mean FLYING or just any kind of ground training?

It doesn't say that (as pointed out below). For a RE-endorsement, i.e. you have already endorsed the student and are just giving the 90 day update nothing is required. That may not be the brightest thing on earth to do, but that's the requirement.

As the CFI, if you have not previously endorsed that student then you have to cover all the stuff outlined for an initial solo (flight) before you can give the 90 day endorsement - while this is not one the most broken rules in aviation, it's right up there, I've seen students with 90 day endorsements from CFI's they've never flown with.
