My nephew who is 5 just went in for brain surgery. I have baby sat him at least 2 days a week since he was a week old and I love him as much as I love my own children. Please pray for him and his surgeon!!!!!!!

Oh and this is NOT an April Fools joke... :(

:( Sorry to hear about your nephew. Hope everything goes well. Please keep us posted--I will keep him in my prayers. :)

I wouldn't think you or anyone else would be twisted enough to post that as an April Fool's joke. :banghead:

Just got word. He is out of surgery. They believe it to have been successful. It took 2 hours LESS than planned (was supposed to be a minimum of 5 hours).

They can't know everything is fine for a couple days but are EXTREMELY confident. The first thing they have to wait for is him to wake up. They need to make sure he is able to speak without slurring (which will take a while after getting out of the medicines). After that they have to make sure he can walk and has his motor skills (which will be at least a day or two before he can get up and walk due to everything).

Now comes the recovery. They say this is one of the worst recoveries ever due to pain. I can't imagine the migraine headache that would come from having your brain cut into. Hopefully him being so young will help with the quick recovery!

Thanks for the kind words and any and all extra prayers! The families biggest concern now is recovery. My nephew does NOT handle pain well at all nor does he handle waking up after going under. He wakes up freaking out. We hope that he is able to wake up calmly this time cause he can't be thrashing around with his head and all!

Oh that's good news! :) I'm sure he will be sedated and kept out of pain. He's had surgery before? Poor baby......:(
It really is heartbreaking to hear of children who've been through so much in their short lives. Hopefully, this will be the last of it and he'll be healthy for the rest of his life.

Wow, just read this, glad he is out of surgery. Kids will surprise you with how they handle big events like this. I hope you are pleasantly surprised by him, and that he has a full and quick recovery.

What happened to cause this, if I may ask?

He has a thing called a syrinx. His brain had a problem with the spinal fluid production/retention. They had to cut a peice out of his cerebral cortex about the size of an index finger. It was a complete fluke that even found he had this. Most people get this and end up paralyzed because they aren't aware of the problem until it is past the point of being able to operate. He happened to fall and get a concussion. The doctor wanted to be really cautious and did a CT scan and found the syrinx in the scan. If he hadn't fallen and went to that doctor it would have been found too late. He was already having the negative side affects such as extreme leg pain and inability to feel hot and cold in hands and feet.

wow, glad they caught that in time! Good to hear everything went well, I'll keep my fingers crossed for an easy recovery!

The night before his surgery he climbed in bed and told my sister, "I don't want this to be the last night I go to bed. I don't want to die tomorrow." It broke my heart!

He is doing ok. They had to remove some of his skull so he is in extreme pain. He hasn't really talked much but today he told me on the phone, "I am okay" then started to cry. :( That was the most words he had spoken at one time since the surgery. I love my little man! I hate that he is in pain. He is healing fast though and they think he might be able to leave the hospital early. All good things!!

I am grateful for all the prayers and concern. Thanks everyone!!

Update: Nephew was released yesterday. He is doing good and the pain is being controlled fairly well. Thanks for all the concern everyone!!!
