30 degree steep turns partial panel?

JordanD

Here so I don’t get fined
I ran into a guy who was getting ready for his II checkride, and he said the examiner was looking to see steep turns, partial panel. I'm assuming this means no gyro, and he wanted them to be at a precise bank angle, I can't remember if it was 30 or 45, but either way I don't see how that would work. His reasons weren't exactly good, but really, is this even allowed? I don't really see the practical application here since really why would you be doing steep turns after you lost your gyros anyway? :dunno:
Hopefully I'm missing something here, because I would NOT be happy if I was busted on a checkride for that.

hahaha, he could be looking to knock out unusual attitude in the same manuver. A twofer.

No, you can't tell bank angle without gyros while on instruments.

Steep turns are not in the instrument PTS anymore, he won't get busted on it.

So the turn/slip indicator doesnt show bank information?

Bank Angle info, no.
Though if you have done your home work in a specific plane you could know off the top of you head what airspeed is required for a standard rate turn to equal 30 degrees of bank. Though in a chickenhawk, I bet it will only be achieved in a full power dive. ha.

I was under the impression that you can't combine maneuvers on a checkride?

Not that it matters, since this particular one seems to have no merit/purpose to me.

Or look at it the other way. It shows a standard degree turn when coordinated, so you could know your bank for a certain plane. It might be splicing hairs, but im gonna say the coordinator does show bank information.

Rate of turn is different than bank angle. Maneuvers are combined on checkrides all the time.

EDIT: Hey, I see you're in Louisville! Yeah, you're buddy is wrong, all the examiners here want to see steep turns, but none of them want you to do it PP. I'll use initials since this is a public forum, but PH wants at least 30 degrees, PM and LB want 40-50 full panel, and WR and DS rarely make you do them.

I'm not for certain if you can or not, but like someone said, it's done all the time. I really think it depends on the DPE. I know when I took my CFI initial with a Fed, we combined a few things.. of course it was August and 90 something outside, we didn't want to be in the air forever.

That DPE sounds old skool.

Hey, as a side note, wtf is a steep turn?? I haven't been able to go over 20 degrees since May!

This guy's taking his ride with PH. I thought it seemed a little weird, so I guess the guy must have misunderstood what he wanted or (hopefully) it was a joke that was lost on him.

Is DS the FAA guy? I've heard of all the other ones. Did my private with ID and will either be using him again or PH depending on who my CFII sets me up with.

The key to this manuever is running oversquare. :sarcasm:
Doesn't count unless you do it in the flare while retracting your flaps. Roadhouse.

Go to PH, the guy is as fair as you'll ever get and he's REALLY old skool and you always leave a checkride with him smarter than when you came in. Where are you doing your training? I'm over at AC1, we should hit Bearnos up one day just to say hello.

Yeah I've heard good things about pretty much all of those guys. Apparently PM can be pretty though though. I'm doing my training over at Louisville Av but renting from Givens on occasion when I just need to go get current or something. Shoot me a PM sometime, I work nights so I'm free most of the time.

Will do, good luck! Hey, what happened to 80802? I never got the story on that thing, aborted takeoff or brake failure or something?
