2018 FedEx Expo

Pilot Hiring Expo to be held on May 2, 2018 according to latest communication from CP. Details to follow when available.

And 500+ new-hires this year. Latest bid had vacancies go unfilled in every airplane. 60+ in the 777, 100 in the MD-11, 200+ in the 757, lots to the Airbus. 1(ish) year to hold LAX (MD11), that was once a decade to hold. Newhires held IND, ANC, CGN and HKG. HKG domicile (767), had 14 unfilled positions. 757 CA went to 14 months seniority-- 4250 out of 4700. 767 CA went to 3400 out of 4700.

These are the "good old days." Come aboard, it's a fantastic time to be a FedEx pilot. *knocks on wood*

Why does MEM 757 go so junior? One would think there are enough local guys that would jump on it and sit reserve while on their couch at home.

You'd think!

Life is pretty darn good as a wide body FO on the 777 or the MD-11. Many of those senior FO's fly 1, 8-12 day trip a month for 80+ hours of pay with 24-72hr layovers in Paris, Dubai, Sydney, Osaka, Tokyo and Shanghai and get 20-22 days off a month doing it for 225-300k. So they just get comfortable and wait until they can slide to the left seat.

I'm on the 757 right now, and most of the junior guys I fly with are coming off the 777/-11 and can't wait to get back. The senior 757 captains bid the airplane because it goes to their home city and they bid the overnights there for the most part.

Oh ok, I see that makes sense.

Of all the Fdx rides I take, I'm usually on the 757. Nice birds, especially with the new full-glass cockpit upgrades!

Are the trip lengths at FedEx generally 8-12 day stretches at a time as mentioned above? Is there a pretty even mix of both civilian and military in recent classes, or more of one than the other? I recall FedEx holding a similar event last year, did anyone have success after attending last year's expo?

Thanks for any insight.

There's no typical trip. There's out and backs, hub turns, 1&2 day trips all the way to trips lasting over a week. The 777 will obviously do the longer trips, the -11 has some but they go fairly senior, the 767 is soon getting a "bunk in a can" so they are going to start heading down to VCP.

There really is something for everyone, including "day" flying. With this last bid, they do one about once a year or so, there will be hiring into all airframes.

Classes are about 50/50 with it going a little more civilian lately just do to availability.

The career fair supposedly does nothing for your application however if you go you'll see lots of similar faces at your interview fwiw.

Registration begins at 8:00 am CDT on Monday, March 7.

Good. Luck last time it was highly competitive to get a spot. Make sure your profile on pilot credentials is complete.

I know a few that went last time and said they didn't take any resumes or had recruiter meetings and that it really didn't help them with their app, but they did say they put on a great tour and presentation.

Does anyone know if your pilot credentials app is actually reviewed to generate an invite to the FedExpo, or is it just computer selected by parameters set by recruiting?

Fairly certain it's a little of both with a first come first serve overlying parameter and a little PFM sprinkled in.

I went last year. It was well put together and very informative, but it was NOT a job fair. If you’re the slightest bit interested in them I’d highly recommend it...very impressive operation.

How senior is the "day" flying? Only reason I ask is because I'm over the whole "lose ten years off your life so someone can get their iPad a day earlier".

I have nothing at all against FedEx but research into that type of flying hasn't been very positive for lifespans.

I think I read somewhere that only 55% of FedEx's block hours are night. Could be wrong. But if you have an issue with night flying, look elsewhere. It's the nature of the beast.

I am well aware. Hence the reason I asked. I know FedEx likely has the most day flying of US cargo operators but I heard it was a good 6 years or so till you could actually hold mostly day flying (old info). I can deal with a couple years of solid nights if that is all it takes now.

Personally I enjoy PM flying, just not when you have to wake up in the afternoon and fly till 6AM.

Currently I don't have an app in at any cargo carriers as a result.
