Terminate or furlough? Either one is not good and obviously there is a huge difference.

I cannot imagine them not providing protection.

Probationary pilots at ALPA carriers receive all protections under the contract with one big exception: if management terminates you, you can't file a grievance. Everything else in the contract still applies, though.

At Air Canada Jazz we had a bit of a surplus of pilots a few months back. The company offered "special LOAs" and reduced flying blocks (you get blocked at 35-40hrs, as opposed to 75-77) to alleviate any furloughs. Lots of people took advantage of them. Some junior pilots (6-8 months in the company) took the SLOA and went back-packing through europe, stayed at home with the newborn, etc. The reduced flying blocks was great for pilots with part-time jobs or businesses or pilots with rich spouses who dont want to work. So far this has been working well and pilots of all seniority levels have been taking advantage of it.

Can someone file a grievence for you? On your behalf?

On the other hand if our union starts noticing an abundant pattern of proby terminations we may have something to say about that. And it has gotten the attention of our MEC chair btw...As some of the terms they are hearing about have been over things they would not have been fired for if they were off probation. They are looking at it from what I understand but it's a slippery slope.

Yep. You can still file grievances on any issues not related to termination. If the company violates the contract on a work rules, let's say, then you can still file a grievance as a probie.

It's another way of saying that you can be terminated within the first year if the company so desires.

True, but they still have to have just cause. They can't fire you just because they don't like you. All of the due process clauses in the agreement still apply, so they still have to give you a hearing, go through the investigation process, etc...
