1979 172 rg low voltage

I've been unable to fly for over a week now due to an electrical problem with the 1979 cessna 172 rg im flying for my commercial. Everytime I put the gear up after takeoff the alternator appears to kick off (low voltage light on, no charge on ampmeter). MX has said they had it 'fixed' several times only to find the problem still exist. I think they are now thinking of getting a new electic motor for the electro-hydraulic gear system. Any ideas?

Also when the alternator kicks off it does not pop a fuse. My thought was that if the electric gear motor was drawing to much it would pop a fuse and then kick the alternator off line. that doesn't happen.

It is a very common problem with 172RGs. Just recycle the alternator and be on your way.

Yeah that, there's probably a voltage spike when you raise the gear that's tripping the overvoltage meter or whatever they're calling it in the 172RG (I don't remember) anyhow, recycle the alternator and it should be fine. That's a fairly common occurrence. If I recall it happens when you bust 32.5volts or something like that (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong).

Remember to keep that ammeter in your scan, I know more than a few guys who have run a battery dead in flight because they didn't pay attention to the discharging ammeter for the whole flight then were surprised when they lossed comms at their destination. In some airplanes, I've seen them trip for turbulence.

I had a similar issue on a seneca. Have your mechanics check out and probably replace the master relay.
