172N

I bought a 1979 172N back in January with a bad cam shaft for $23,500. It took 6 weeks, a overhauled engine with 4 new cylinders, all new wiring from the firewall forward, new mags, new motor mounts but it’s finally here. The work cost me just under $25,000, so I’m in it for a total of $48,500 which isn’t bad considering they’re going for $70k on controller with 500-1000 hours on the motor, I’d say I came out ahead.

Who did you use for the overhaul? Was the 25k just for the engine overhaul?
I see a guy in Phoenix where I bought it. He was former SkyWest mechanic and director of mx for atp. The overhaul was $19k but I elected to change the mounts which you should do at overhaul, the alternator belt, wiring, 4 new cylinders, the old ones were bad, and a new cam shaft

I had a well over TBO H2AD in my seaplane. It had the mods. Never caused me any trouble and I sold it for about what you paid.

H2ADs are fine by now.

If you're going to replace it with anything go for the 180 conversion, don't waste your time with 160.

The brown flame trick on the pants is a new one on me. Can't decide if I like it.

What's your wet rental rate on that thing? Just curious about how it compares out here. I've toyed (still am) with the idea of buying one and putting it to work in a local fleet. I just sort of shudder at the thought of how Primary students beat up airplanes, although solo renters are FAR worse.

@killbilly i thought of that idea too about leaseback my Stinson to do tailwheel checks outs, but decide to take a small hit and sell it. Too much liability I figure.

Although, I’m not adverse to buying a PA28 or C172 and doing a leaseback to a local school. They seem to have the business (for now...)

If you aren’t there to watch over it closely I don’t recommend it. Bald tires are the norm. I’m a hawk when it comes to that stuff but it still makes the plane have down time which can kill it. I rent it for $140/hr. I put away $40/hr for gas and $24/hour reserve for mx. I do the oil changes, brakes, spark plugs, and most minor work allowed by the FARs. I have lots of support from experienced A&Ps I’ve known for 20 years. I have a guy that does the 100 hour for $500 so it ain’t too bad

Replace the landing light with an LED when it burns out next. The flying club I was in had a 172 with that same landing light, and we'd go through 3-4 a year. We got a LED and haven't replaced it in 5 years. It failed once because a wire got loose, that has been the only issue. Money well spent.

I used to change 3 or 4 a week, I haven't changed a landing light since we went LED 5 years ago.

I’ve got the LED on my M model. I’ll probably go with LED on this one too after I put in adsb

You own a flight school? At SNA? That would be cool to check out. I just moved fairly close to TOA and hear lots of GA planes buzzing around. Kinda makes me want to get back into a GA plane.
