Since when do CRJ 900s fly 1541 miles on 4 hour flights?

They've been doing this for a while, for $19 an hour and no union protection.

ExpressJet is flying an EMB-145XR from Houston to Toronto for Continental.

This is pretty normal these days. I'm not sure what region these planes are flying in, but it's pretty normal.

So? Management will fly these legs until unions get tougher scope protection, which - is not likely.

No amount of work, besides stronger scope restrictions at mainline, will slow this type of stuff down.

Exactly. I hope to God that CAL holds onto their 50 seat scope, 'cause I'm not interested in flying anything bigger than the EMB-145 unless it's on the branded side.

Not only is the mileage not regional, the aircraft (CRJ9) can only be seen as a clear replacement for a mainline aircraft with first class etc.

The fact that companies SKWY (CRJ9) Republic (E170/5) Mesa (CRJ9) continue to grow with these aircraft at pay rates that are a few dollars above current 50 seat rates is horrible for our collective futures. Equally distressing are the lines of pilots who are willing to do it. The Skywest group (in my eyes) has just shown how weak they are. We'll see what Republic does on their contract, hopefully they'll put something together that will put some real money in the pilot's pockets. Until then, those guys are putting a nail in the back of the industry for a paltry wage.

My $02....And yeah....I'm pissed with these SKYW guys.

Good . . .be pissed.

Enough of this being nice stuff. Old school union tactics are in need, pronto.

But what do I know. . .:sarcasm:

Geez, just a few short years ago the RJDC was suing ALPA because the scope restrictions were negatively impacting their career expectations!

Wow. Turns out the RJ -- check that, management's use of the RJ -- most negatively affected the junior MAJOR airline pilot's career expectations.

For example, the city-pairs I used to fly in the DC9, and even some of the city-pairs I flew in the 737-300, are now flown by 50, 70, and 90 seat regional jets for a FRACTION of the pay and horrible working conditions.

We are our own enemy in many ways, aren't we?

Not that MCI-MEM is that far, but I've noticed that when I go home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, that either the MCI-MEM or the MEM-MCI leg on both trips is now on a CRJ when it was always a DC-9.

Yea, and on top of all that, my dad and I have to cram into a little jet that we won't even be able to stand in! (He's 6'6", I'm 6'4")

[sarc:/] :/

Yep. And good ole NWA is gonna slit their own throats again with Compass. Management got exactly what they wanted: a vehicle to put more flying in the regional side of things and less at mainline.

Well look on the bright side...that increases the odds of me being one of your pax! :D

Actually, if you think about it, RJ captains get paid more, on a per seat/passenger basis. Airline Pilot Central says a top 737 guy for UA gets paid about $130/hour for flying about 130 passengers. That's a dollar a seat. Meanwhile a top AWAC CRJ guy gets paid about $90 for flying 50 seats. That's about $1.80 a seat.

Um... ok... Let's see.
The DC9-30 carried 100 pax. EMB190 carries 100 pax.
The F100 carried 85 pax. The CRJ 900 carries 90 pax.
The F28 carried 65 pax. The CRJ 700 carries 70 pax.
The BAC 111 carried 65 pax. The ERJ 145 carries 50 pax.

Yes, clearly airline management had some benefit to doing it. Hence the RJ nicknames you may have heard such as "Replacement Jet" and "Scope Buster". They managed to take a narrowbody platform and reduce the crew costs and benefits. Did passenger ticket prices fall as well? Nope... our pax aren't getting a "sorry you had to fly on an RJ" discount.

So lets make sure we have this straight. Management replaced the DC9 with a newer, more economical airframe. They continued to receive the same revenue from that platform... but they found replacement workers who were willing (with ALPA's blessing) to come to work for a fraction of the pay and benefits of their now-furloughed counterparts.

If we all put on our management glasses for a moment it's really easy to see why this happened.

Poor logic...Then you can say the Colganites get paid more than the top 737 guy. 34 seats at $61/hr comes out to $1.80 as well. You sure as hel! aren't seeing guys going to Colgan for their long term captain pay.

Heck..I flew a 172 with 4 seats in it for $18/hr. $4+/seat.
