Was just about to blow a fuse. I started my flying lessons at 14 but was told i'd have to wait to solo at 16. I was just about to lose it, thinking, i wasted 2 years of not flying anymore waiting till i can at least solo only to find out, it's only possible in canada.:insane: :insane:

Big up's on the kid! That's pretty amazing!! I thought soloing the helicopter is way cooler than the plane. I always hear great stories about Compton's airport. I always pass by it on the way to my cousins but get too creeped out to stop due to the area it's in.;)

the part of compton it's in is actually not that bad and the prices make it even more appealing. 69.00 an hour wet for a piper warrior. is great for me. the locationif the airport is also great. right near 4 towered airports and right next to the los anglels special flight rules corridor. alot of advantages from flying there

Damn, that is nice. But i ono, 35 minute drive for flying lessons. I guess i'll continue at CNO.

That's crazy, good for the kid though, pretty awesome.

The instructor was annoying though.

Call me evil, but wouldnt it have been hilarious if he started crying when they threw the water on him?lololololololol

that instructor looks classy.

I was kinda thinking the same thing...like he was making a bigger deal over race than anyone else.

Learn to use capital letters . . .

I actually give a &^$% that he's black. It's pretty neat to see black kids getting involved in aviation.

See, you might not understand this, but there aren't a whole lot of black pilots, for a variety of reasons. So, although you may not care, there are some that do.

Is the main reason because there are less black people in the U.S. than there are white people? You know, I kinda thought that's what minority meant...lol.

I understand what you're saying, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't expecting to see a goofy looking little white kid that's been playing MSFS since he was 8, but at the same time I fully believe race is an issue because people like that flight instructor make it an issue. I don't tell a story like, "Yeah my CFI told me his best student was my aunt's neighbor...WHO IS BLACK!" That's actually true, but I would usually say, "My CFI said his best instructor is my aunt's neighbor...WHO IS A DETECTIVE!"

Good for him! I'm not a huge fan of seeing people that young trying to break records (brings back memories of the little girl that died in Wyoming, I think, about 10 years ago after attempting a similar thing).

Very glad to see him do that, though. Good work.

stay tuned for the first one-legged-three-eyed korean going into space!!

Why is there a need to clarify that the child is african american? We can all see that. Reminds me of the crap when people say, "you're just saying/doing that because I'm (insert minority group)." You're the one being racist by bringing attention to it.

I'm still working on starting the caucasian college fund, WET, and anything else i can think of.

I think it's neat to see ANY kid getting involved in aviation. I don't care about the childs race or background or anything.

hmmphh!

Yeah, he sure is... I've seen him a couple of times on some news stories and on the show Airline (Southwest... A&E). There's always something about him that just... aah!!

No disrespect or anything, but I'm hispanic and I really don't care if there aren't many hispanic pilots out there. It is nice to see black or hispanic pilots out there, but this instructor is always pushing it... I think by watching the news story, we'll notice the kid is African American. That goes for all the times I've seen him and has mentioned something like that...

makes sense to me. Here are the wikipedia facts from 2000 census:

White American
  • 80.4%, or about 238 million (includes those who declared themselves as white-Hispanics; those of caucasian Middle Eastern and North African descent.
  • 67.4%, or about 199.5 million (excludes white-Hispanics, but includes Middle Easterners and North Africans.)
Black or African American 12.8% or 37.8 million,

wouldnt it make sense then for there to be a smaller amount of Black Aviators?

I dont think his race matters. I feel like everyone wants to be equal until something noteworthy comes along. Then they are their own breed for the day or week.

cut the kid and the instructor some slack. yes he is black but he is just a normal person. the kid wasnt saying im so proud because i am the first black kid to do this.as fot the instructor/ owner, yes he can be & look kinda annoying but you have to admit that he is doing a good thing here. any one can do this, no matter what the race. infact, there was a hispanic girl that set a record there too, and when i go there i see white kids there too. this program is just for children who love aviation and who are under privaliged and cant afford lessons for one reason or another.

I think the issue here is that their aren't too many black aviators because of the insane ammount of money it cost to learn to fly. When I'm in an airport and see a black pilot I make sure I go and talk to them shake their had and let them know I appreciate what they do.

Unless it's Doug then I'm like ******** wheres my ***** ****** money.

Seriously. The kid has done some good for himself and who knows who he might inspire in his community to go after their dreams. To be doing what he is doing and not be on drugs or selling them or have joined a gang in his area and to have his entire family support him is truly awesome. How do I know.

He comes from a drug and crime invested area where your considered a chump if you work a 9-5 for pennies and stupid for getting good grades in school. When the local dope boys on the corner are the neighborhood super stars dropped outa school and still look fly with their flashy chains, nice clothes, new kicks and flashy expensive cars.

How do I know my step father taught in Compton and Watts for a number of years before marrying my mom and moving to Tucson.

Or your momma works three jobs to make ends meet and #### if you know who ya daddy is. I'll say it again the kid coulda done worse for himself. Sorry if I'm not as impressed to see a white kid from suburbia do the same. Besides it was more the media making an issue of the kids race more then the kids family, the kid or the flight instructor so your issue should be with the white national media and not the kid or his family.

But I'll say that its refreshing to actually hear something positive and uplifting to myself and the compton african-american community instead of all the negative news sound bites that we as a country all to often hear about blacks as a race.

I think I understand most of what you're saying.lol. The point is the kid was not making his race an issue, the news reporterswere not making his race an issue, his parents did not make his race an issue, but the instructor DID. I think it's pretty obvious the instructor is looking either for more attention or has another agenda on top of training proficient pilots.

As to you saying that he is black and a normal person, I don't think anyone here was saying he isn't a normal person, that would be the instructorwho thinks it's an amazing thing for a black kid to fly an airplane.:whatever:
