    Question About CFI Initial

I'm sure there is a lot of useful information to be used in the aviation instruction atmosphere, but it just seemed to me that there is a lot of extraneous information contained in that Aviation Instructor's Handbook. I've been an instructor in many different fields in my career, and perhaps in...

    Question About CFI Initial

Do you really need to know all this FOI crap backwards and forwards for the check ride? Should I expect a large portion of time devoted to this during the oral? I'm sure it probably depends on the examiner, but I was curious what experiences you all had. BTW, I passed my FOI written today...

    Detroit Area Controllers

I flew into DTW for the first time today. For some reason I had it in my mind that it was going to be a nightmare, especially with the lousy weather. I must say, all the controllers were very professional and very friendly. First experience was a positive one, though I can't say the same for...

    PDK VOR/DME-D

That's correct. I was advised by an Option's pilot that the Honeywell FMS's do not have circling approaches in the database. We actually had it in there on the Collins FMS, just didn't recognize the abbreviation in the thick of the busyness.

    Approach question - Unnamed IAF?

You have it correct. As far as I understand it, they don't label fixes on the arc because it's not a fix you would be vectored to, so there's no reason to identify them. You enter the approach phase from the en route phase (from a feeder route) as soon as you enter the DME arc at the IAF.

    PDK VOR/DME-D

Yeah, sometimes it's easy to forget how things used be done, and rely on the FMS to handle everything for you. That day it was crazy busy, we got an approach we weren't expecting with little warning, and it just wasn't the time to be reviewing the chart haphazardly while shooting an unfamiliar...

    PDK VOR/DME-D

Yes, updated it that morning, but that was not the issue that we later discovered. Using the Collins FMS-3000, the approach was listed as VDMD, which you had to select and then select the runway to circle to after that selection. I don't know why they didn't just list it as VOR/DME-D. We had...

    Vectoring and Radar Tracking

How exactly to you go about advising an aircraft of a particular vector in order to point them towards an airport or a fix? I'm guessing you can draw some kind of line electronically on the radar scope and it gives you the heading? Also, say I happen to "tweek" my heading a little so as to go...

    Aerial Mapping

Roger, thanks. This company actually only flies Aztec's and Navajo's. They don't have any 172's. I did obtain some info from someone after I posted this and they said they start out in the low 30's. I understand they do other stuff other than mapping. Some of the ops are low level and some...

    Aerial Mapping

Does anyone know what the typical starting salary for aerial mapping pilot jobs is? This would be flying Aztec's and Navajo's. And this would be for low time, 500 hour range experience.

    GCO?

I used one once and got it to work. You have to key the mike very slowly with a slight pause in between keys. But it took me 3 tries to get it to work. You're better off calling the local TRACON, or, lord forbid, the clearance delivery number (which will sometimes take 30 minutes to get your...

    PDK VOR/DME-D

Has anyone flown that approach? We got it assigned today and it threw us for a loop. I could not locate it in the FMS database and we ended up having to shoot the ILS 20L and then circle to land on 2R. I'm guessing it was not in the FMS because it's circling only, and not a runway based...

    Swept Wing Jets

I've been flying in a Citation Encore for about a year and a half. I've been trying to work my way into a Lear jet but I was told with my low hours that I was not ready to do that yet. (Not disagreeing) I've gotten bits and pieces about how swept wing jets are a different animal and carry more...

    American Flyers?

I've just decided to go the old fashioned route. It's just been hard working a full time job land job, flying part time, being a father and a husband, and working up the motivation to work on it. It'll take longer, but a lot cheaper in the long run I guess. Thanks for the comments.

    American Flyers?

I looked up some info on their website and read a little about the 2 week program to get CFI-A and CFI-I. They are advertising $2995 for the entire program. Does anyone have any input on this? Is it a worthwhile program? I'm sick of procrastinating and I want to just get it done. Thanks.

    Question on Lesson Plans

Is it acceptable to use FAA diagrams in my lesson plans? Or any diagram I can find online for that matter. I figured since it was not something I would be selling, rather, just using as a teaching aid that it would not be an issue. I would rather do that than try to draw my own cheesy...

    Citation Over-run in Brazil (video)

We put a 560 down in KXSA, 4300 ft, on a regular basis. It's still not too bad as long as you are stable and on speed. Fast, heavy, and light head wind makes it interesting though.

I'll say that I'm impressed that the fuselage stayed intact after that! They must have severely screwed up that approach to still be going that fast on an over-run.

    Reading back instructions

I was curious what input controllers had on this. I notice a lot of pilots read back altitude assignments in a certain way. For example, "NABC12, climb and maintain flight level 360", in which they respond "360 for NABC12" or "up to 360 for NABC12". I've always read back the full "Climb and...
