My experience in corporate America - expect more managers, not less. And expect lots of workload to be added that does not involve talking to airplanes. TPS reports, all hands meetings, one on one meetings, metrics dashboards, etc., etc....
As someone who has been using this stuff for 25 years, it is much better now. I can file a flight plan on my phone, I get the expected route back within a minute. Clearance delivery usually has it before I can call them. RNAV approaches are ubiquitous, and have much better minimums that...
Agree, I can see no universe where the next Congress would create a non profit run ATC system. Because it wouldn't be much different than now, except Congress would have less control of it.
The for profit system they would likely favor would have some challenges - to make a profit, it...
I've done enough somewhat interesting stuff with airplanes that it crossed my mind to put some of it online. But like anything, when I thought about how much time and effort would go into producing quality content, I decided that there were other things I would rather be doing.
They guy I know doing this is not at all young. He does have a successful significant other, which may or may not make things easier. That said, it's pretty hard to get experience and time in airplanes if you aren't at an airport. A lot. I do agree, what works is going to be different for...
Totally fair to ask. I don't know the details of other people's personal finances. What I do see, is someone having a bunch of roommates, other side gigs (boat captain in this case), and doing it 7 days a week. And probably a good bit of cash saved before going into it. The A&P is like a...
Spending a ton of time at the airport, and making sure everyone there knows you. I know someone who just switched careers, spends most of his time in the MX shop, but has managed to get a few hundred hours by just being there and available. And will end up with an A&P as well pretty soon...
Buying an airplane was pretty easy. Almost all of my time in it is dual given though. The sales and marketing side of being a CFI isn't really covered in most training. It is pretty important though - you don't do much teaching without having students.
If I were “StinsonFan,” I would take a look at motor gliders. They don’t need a medical. And are in many ways awfully similar to airplanes. And a logbook endorsement would be all you need to fly one PIC. Or a certificate to do so with passengers. And the certificate is pretty quick and...
I'm paying anywhere between $4 and $9.50 right now. The only good thing about Covid? Paying $2.04/gal for avgas 4 years ago. Miss that, don't think it will happen again.
I remember it being somewhere under $1.50 when I stared flying in the 90's, regular gas was less than $1. I was also paying $31 wet for a Cessna then, and thought the $1,200 for a multi add-on seemed kind of pricey. The $18/hr I was making back then wasn't so bad in hindsight.
I don't expect much to change soon with MOSAIC. Light sports are great, but don't have much impact in the training world now for a few reasons. There aren't that many of them to begin with. The new ones cost as much as an older Cessna or Piper. And the low useful load limits you from...
I was just stuck next to KDAB this week. Well, they have the nicest buildings in town. Nicer than NASCAR. Anyway, glad I was there for one night and not 4 years.
I don't work with networks, but my guesses are usually a backhoe going through fiber somewhere, or a a bad router advertisement. Because I still don't trust the black magic of BGP. Also, low latency telco circuits are expensive - I wouldn't rule out someone trying to save a few bucks and run...
They take a lot of space to park, so are usually stored with the wings off. Or get trailered somewhere else to fly. And most importantly, there is always a chance that the last time a glider flew, it landed out in a field somewhere. Landing off-airport isn't an emergency for gliders. The...
Which radios/navigators/HSI were installed? This stuff has gone from "not standardized but mostly the same" to "wild west of the AP only works on #2 nav source, but only when HSI is in GPS, but not when..." And it's usually buried in an 800 page install manual, and not the pilot supplement :(
Take a look on flightaware if you are curious. Around me, the turboprops get pretty much the same routes and approaches that my bug-smasher does. Anyway, still plenty of victor airways in use.
At least in my Garmin GPS, when you load a VOR approach, it warns you "NOT APPROVED FOR GPS. GPS guidance is for monitoring only. Activate approach?" But it totally points at the station, and agrees with my nav CDI, no offsets or anything like that.
I don't think the information is conflicting - you still have to monitor the underlying navaid from the FAF onwards. I think the confusing part might be in AIM 1-2-3 c.4 Note 5 "Use of a suitable RNAV system as a means to navigate on the final approach segment of an instrument approach...
