Well, Dr. Kissinger has been dead for more than a year. I think it is time for a new avatar, but I'm not sure what that should be. (I used that because he was iconic and recognized, but I do realize he was also a divisive figure -- for good reason). Open to suggestions. Lacking any better...

I don't think there is much style or elegenace to that. Instead of a ban, just default every account here to ignore the same list. Make it an "Opt In." I'm happy to write the whole single SQL statement to do it.

Looking behind that ignore curtain has never been worth it. Not once. You wouldn't have put it up if you didn't already know that.

    PSA CRJ-700 AA midair collision

The Bravo around here goes down to 1200'. And, in theory, we aren't supposed to be below 1000' where those sectional charts are yellow, so... yeah. Making the airspace more restrictive would be fine in theory, but approach doesn't have the staffing to deal with the traffic that's currently...

    PSA CRJ-700 AA midair collision

How do you think we fly near KMIA or KFLL? Take a look at the terminal area chart down there. Below 400' is pretty normal following the shoreline by FLL. And that feels to high if you are paying attention.

Another Plane Crash...This time in Lancaster PA

I wouldn't know, I've never flown one with the door closed. It's kind of a stall warning when you see the door float up :)

Another Plane Crash...This time in Lancaster PA

Having seen how the latch mechanism works inside an Apache door, I don't have much confidence in it. I had one pop open in flight not too long ago. Needed an A&P to adjust the cable to the latch to fix it. Anyway, I've had doors pop open on lots of planes, has always been a non-event up...

If it is really that bad, happy to help you get into my old line of work. It has no seniority (they might give you a few extra days off after 10 years), and QOL is not a concept that really exists. If you said something like "Work/Life Balance," you could get fired for that. Yes, that was...

Keep staying the course? Investing in volatile times

I bought puts on the S&P at the worst of Covid. Stock market didn't crash, but I also didn't lose everything. Puts expired worthless, but I made 30x more than that on the securities that I didn't sell. Can be cheap insurance if you are worried. And you'll likely be able to write off the...

FAA Tech Ops layoffs and U/S equipment

I thought my VOR/LOC was broken for a while, it turned out that every (more than 4) VOR that I had tried to use on the west coast of Florida was out of service. 30 day VOR checks are a bit onerous when you need to spend a whole day flying to find a working one...

Safety at large flight schools vs. small schools / clubs

I treat every training flight like it is the one that is going to kill me. Discipline, procedure, flying the 1000th time like it was the 2nd time doing something. I don't know, the longer I've done this, the more careful I have become. And I was already pretty careful.

That's also when the vast majority of training flying happens. It's pretty lonely up there at night in a piston single. Even lonelier when there are clouds.

    NoPT Question....

Every time this situation comes up in real life for me, it has been in IMC, and I get an instruction like that half a mile from the fix. My habit is to read back "Cleared straight in RNAV XYZ approach" when it is ambiguous to me, but I'm pretty sure that's what they meant -- not sure that's...

Safety at large flight schools vs. small schools / clubs

Not flying into IMC, going to a very limited number of airports, and having students that are mostly full time removes a lot of risk I'm sure. Aircraft types almost certainly must play a role. The big box schools don't do a lot of tailwheel, aerobatic, floatplane, or other instruction in...

Military/ Civilian Time from PSA CRJ-700 Thread

Well, it adds up when you are doing it for 24 hours/day. It was 3 days on the open water at about that speed to make it to the Bahamas. We were also sailing into 35kts of wind and pretty gnarly waves. And only 2 of us on the boat -- I was a nice guy and took all of the midnight watches.

    Electronic E6-Bs

I took the Coast Guard Captain exams not too long ago, they still have you use a plotter and dividers on paper charts with lat/long to plot a course, speeds, etc. Something I expect to do exactly never on a boat, since they all have chartplotters now. I did score 100% on it somehow.

ForeFlight. We would want ForeFlight. Something I use every day, and am still finding easier ways to do things with. Logbook, W&B, Performance calculations, fuel calculations, crosswinds -- it does a lot. Having it linked to my GPS with Bluetooth is so useful, that I won't own another...

From Stalking Thread - Sensitive Communication Topic

I don't think that implementation or operations would be the challenge. Since airplanes and avionics operate all over the world, it would need to be some type of international standard. Things like that don't move very fast. Anyway, I think company VPN via satellite would make the most...

Woz would have been way more entertaining. And he's still alive, so it isn't too late. Unfortunately for this plot twist, I don't think he wants to be evil enough to be such a villain. The world could really use some more Wozniak's in positions of influence.

The data stream is so small, you would just store all of it indefinitely and search it. There probably are some legitimate or at least potentially useful ways this data could be used. Also, eavesdropping wouldn't be the word I would use to describe communications that a broadcast entirely...

The level of effort to do it is about the same as picking up ADSB data, which I already do. Because it took me 5 minutes to set up. And I get free Enterprise FlightAware for doing it. And I can see and get alerts for whatever FilghtAware is blocking. (And so can you, as I also upload to adsb...
