Hawaiian airlines is cutting free in-flight meals, moving to pre-paid menu

Is that their callsign? I had no idea!

One of my good friends retired from Delta and went to work for them.

I shot him a text and asked "Must be nice driving from Cave Creek to Scottsdale to do a couple Vegas turns!" and I thought "Man, in retirement, that might be kind of fun!"

"Oh man, I wish. I can't hold it. I'm commuting to Vegas to fly the ATR"

Wait... IN retirement still playing the seniority and commuting game? Eff that! Ha!
If we’re thinking about the same person I didn’t know he was a Phoenician. If anything in retirement involves me commuting or being gone more than 3 days I’m out!

Well to be fair, chocolate thunder is already trademarked :)

I feel like that myth is how all those fu*king geezers fell for that sales pitch. If I could retire tomorrow, nay, right this second, I would. Flying? Are you serious? Isn't that something I pay people to do for me? Tell me that kinda lie, and I'll do anything you want. These guys just can't hang it up. I don't think it's the flying. I think it is the 3rd house, 5th wife, 2nd alimony payment, and the god damn dog/3rd plane and it's annual. I would be less judgey if it were really about their enduring love of flying.

Yeah, he does — admittedly — have all that going on.

It seemed like a fun time right before reality slapped me in the face.

I enjoy flying, but not enough to bid, commute, and deal with factory-fresh copilots that say crap like "OMG, do you know how old I was when you retired from SouthernJets?"

Alcohol-fueled rage and laser-like focus on the comings and goings of crew scheduling drives mental health.

I just got to listen to a four hour rant against lazy FAs that don’t wanna do their job anymore. Totally ruined my “I got rerouted and from that alone I’m gonna make more than I did in a month as a gate agent” buzz. Time to go drink and fuel my rage…

Man, given how common alcohol issues are in this industry, I kinda lean in favor of more restrictive rules.

But, I don’t really drink much anymore.

I don't drink at all. But for a lot of guys, not being able to have a glass of wine with dinner on a 10 hour deadhead flight, when you are going into 24 hours of rest when you get there anyway, is a bit of a disappointment.

There would be an uprising here if they didn't allow drinking on our passenger deadheads.

I understand that not everyone will agree with me, but it just isn’t something I’m willing to expend negotiating capital on. Not that I have any say in it anyway.

Yeah, I feel like 8 hrs could be pretty aggressive. But then again, I feel like neither rule is gonna keep you safe if someone really decides to tie one on. Which I think is the scenario generally, when someone makes the news.

Makes you wonder about people who just absolutely cannot go without that drink or alcoholic beverage or glass of wine, can’t simply delay it to later, as if their life depends on it. To the point it makes them emotionally angry and laser focused on something that’s pretty trivial in the big scheme of things like one’s career. Definition of an addiction. Makes you truly wonder if these are the future people who are going to end up on the news for showing up to work with some degree of inebriation. Same with heavy smokers who absolutely cannot go even an hour without a cigarette.
