Ah yes. The infamous and most feared F14 and F18s of then Iranian Air Force. Someone tell someone that is in the movies.


These Iranian fighter jets were US Navy. The last time, the Iranian F14 was actually an A300.

I believe they had just been under attack by the Houthi’s. Maybe IFF issue and mistook for a missile?

Aegis C&D will not engage a track with a valid Mode 4. Even if the missile operator orders an engagement on the track.

planes are allowed to go with an inop or invalid Mode 4 but need to follow RTF profiles otherwise tracks without a valid Mode 4 risk getting evaluated as hostile and subsequently engaged.

We are supposed to check for valid mode 4s on outbound aircraft right after they launch from the carrier

That’s the way things were back in the day.
But it’s been over 20 years since I’ve played that game and had to issue a “take track” order and procedures have evolved during that timeframe.

But my uninformed guess is they didn't have a valid mode 4 coming back and didn’t follow the RTF profile.
