Both Eyes Needed for an ATC?

Hello Doctor! I'm in the process of getting an ATC position. I just took my AT-SAT test and scored 100% BUT I'm afraid of my eyes being a problem. My right eye I can see fine in, but my left eye I've never used. I was born with a cataract and have glaucoma. Will this prevent me from getting in? If so, do you know if there are alternative jobs that would be similar in this field they might consider me for? Thanks for your time & information! Amanda, a hopeful ATC

The FAA , Medical Standards for ATC 3930.3a, says you must have distant vision of 20/20 in each eye separately, or distant visual acuity of 20/200 or better in each eye separately, with correction to 20/20 in each eye.

I suggest you call the Regional Flight Surgeon in your region and ask if they issue waivers for monovision for ATC positions.

Let us know what they say.

So does that mean that the worst your eyes can be is 20/200 uncorrected?

From that link:
Vision Standards — Applicants for ATCS employment in an en route center or a terminal must have distant and near vision of 20/20 or better in each eye separately, without correction, or have lenses that correct distant and near vision to 20/20, each eye separately. Applicants for a flight service station specialist position must have distant and near vision of 20/20 or better in at least one eye, without correction, or have lenses that correct distant and near vision to 20/20, in at least one eye.

I don't see anything anymore about 20/200, which is good for me :rawk:

Additionally, if you read some of the posts over in the Air Traffic Control forum, some people have said that they don't even check uncorrected vision anymore if you're wearing glasses or contacts.
