CrewPASS...The Beginning.

WASHINGTON — The nation's 75,000 airline pilots could avoid being screened for weapons before they board airplanes if a test starting shortly succeeds.
But critics including flight attendants fear that an armed terrorist posing as a pilot could get on an airplane if pilots don't have to walk through metal detectors and have their bags scanned by X-ray machines.

At three test airports, pilots will skip passenger screening and go through separate checkpoints where a screener will check only their airline ID. The test, run by the Transportation Security Administration, will begin in early summer and could be copied around the country at a later date, TSA assistant administrator John Sammon said.

Pilots' unions have been lobbying to skip airport screening, which they call unnecessary and "demoralizing." The Air Line Pilots Association notes that pilots face extensive background tests, and that pilots wanting to do harm with an airplane would hardly need a weapon because they control airplanes.

Airport screening "has just worn on them," said Pete Janhunen, spokesman for the Air Line Pilots Association, the largest pilots' union. "You trust them to fly a multimillion dollar airplane, and yet a TSA inspector with little training, little experience has the ability to strip-search them for gels."

Here's to hoping this goes well and another benefit is brought to the profession that all pilots, not just ALPA members can benefit from.

Note: The article states that we are trying to "skip" security. Not true. We are simply trying to find an equitable solution to professional pilots not having to deal with the same scrutiny as joe six pack, AND increasing the security of our ability (biometrics, Enhanced CASS) to safely provide quality and safe transportation to the American public.

Still some requirements associated with CrewPASS that I'd like to see changed. Also the foundation of the screening is CASS, this won't help cabin crew unless.....and I hope we don't go there.

Well, Cabin Crews. . .if they want the same treatment (which the AFA has stated they DO NOT) they would need to develop a system similar to CASS.

But yes, I really don't want to go there considering the latest jackass who decided to light a fire on the plane since he didn't think he should have been working that flight.

Just as long as they are not added to CASS I could care less. Keeping CASS for cockpit crews and associated cockpit crew jumpseat use is paramount.

I've viewed this article a few times already. Read the comments its funny how we are a bunch of rich pricks basically. Quite funny the publics thoughts about pilots already!

We need this really badly. Its ridiculous that we have to get screened the way we do. And there's no method to the TSA's madness. They usually let me thru security with liquids and gels when Im not in uniform then once in a while some TSA person has a problem with it and strips me of all me liquids. It is very irritating.

To utilize the CrewPASS line you'll need to be in uniform.

Important to remember if you're non-reving. Before going through security, make sure you leave your bomb in ops.

Should smooth things out

:sarcasm:

You have no right to complain if you don't follow the rules.

However asinine their job may be, let them do theirs, and you do yours. Sneaking gels through security out of uniform isn't your job.

A bit. . .but it's really not even worth it man.

Why we continue to sit back while we have our "liquids" stolen is just ridiculous. Not just as aviation professionals who have much larger weapons at our disposal, but as simpleton citizens who just want to take our .99 bottle of water through into the sterile area so that we don't have to pay 3.99 for the same bottle.

It's all a racket, and we shouldn't keep sitting back.

I do think that many of the procedures are asinine and there should be some program (crewpass).

(Not aimed at you Josh, but those that have tried to get stuff through.) But you guys need to follow the current rules, or don't complain about getting big things of liquids taken. By asking to be let through with big liquids, you are asking the agent to willingly violate procedures. They can (and have been) fired for doing that. I don't care what profession or industry you are in, but don't ask for someone to put their job on the line to 'help you out'.

If you are not in uniform the rule of liquids should thus apply. You are no different at that point then a regual pax are you not? :D

Uniform or not, we are the same person with the same background check and same moral standards. My tube of crest isn't going to change that.

CrewPass should apply in uniform or not IMHO. Especially if we are using biometrics.

One step at a time, my friend. We must massage Uncle Sam slowly over time. We're not going to get everything we want all at once. Let's just get the program rolled out first.

I will have to agree with you, to simply get this going would be a miracle of sorts. However getting them to change the rule later would be a herculean effort. Either way, I have the ziploc thing down when we nonrev so it won't be the biggest loss :)

No, im not a regular passenger. They let my through security without a boarding pass because I have a SIDA badge and an airline crew ID. Why can I not go through with liquids just because I don't have a stupid uniform on? I don't know who made that rule up but its dumb. So from now on I'll just take my uniform shirt outta my bag, put it on for a few seconds, and go thru security so they can be happy.
