Rental/Flight Training Cost Increase

So I found out today that the rental price for the 1989 Arrow I'm using for Comm training went up overnight by $10 an hour. This just pushed my dual costs beyond $200/hour :banghead::banghead::banghead:... I hate the high avgas prices!

So, anyone else experiencing the avgas crunch?

Thats just a part of flight training. Always be ready for costs to go up. 200 a hour isn't bad with a CFI for for a complex. You could be doing it in a twin and spending a heck lot more.

They just added a fuel surcharge at my fbo. anywhere from $6/hr to 30/hr depending on fuel burn. I'd normally be skeptical of any "surcharge" but who can blame them these days.

True Champcar, true... I just had to vent somehow.

Our rates have gone up 15/hour putting total cost in a glass 172 at 215/hour including 50/hour for the CFI. It's only going to get worse.

Ugh.. this sucks for all those in the flight training market.

It's gonna squeeze the would-be aviators that much more.

On the other hand, for those of us who have made the 121 leap, it might be not so bad.

That laughed-at "pilot shortage" might not be dead and buried after all.

This is hope for possible furloughees. If the worst happens at somebody's present airline, the lack of 'new hire' candidates elsewhere might still make the transition to another one possible.

dude you're getting your PhD in PHYSICS from MIT. Seriously, get the heck out of this industry! Or at least make a few million first, then do it ;)

We have a $7 fuel surcharge per hour as of 2 weeks ago. I filled up the plane last night and fuel was over $5.50 a gallon. That brings the 172 up to 130 an hour plus the 40 for the CFI. I am about to finish up my PPl and will be starting my IR and then the CFI rates go up to 45....SWEET!

Hopefully I can finish my IR with the 40 hr min to save some money.

jees louise, 200/hr for an arrow with CFi. I pay $90/hr for a sweet arrow and 30/hr for instructor. And Im in So Cali.

Our non-G1000 172s are $119 prepay, $129 regular, not including any additional fuel surcharge (which is usually posted in the lobby). And that's the cheapest plane we've got. Add a $45/$50 CFI onto that and you're at $170 per hour. In a 172.

Our G1000 172s are $139/$149, and our arrows are $149/$159.

Slightly ridiculous.

If your rich, now is a great time to fly GA. This means there will be a lot more planes available. :sarcasm:

I found some very old reciepts from training back in 1992. 172 $37 CFI $15

Find a used cessna/piper mogas conversion

Wow! I was only 12 then and only cared about my skateboard. But that is a HUGE price jump in such a short period of time. Over 200% in 16 years. At that pace there will be no GA by the end of the next 16 years. You would think prices would have to go down eventually or at least stay stagnant for a while, but they won't.
