If you were furloughed...where would you go

Honestly, I think a freight dawg job at Airnet would probably kill my marriage unless I could get a day run outta MEM. That and I'd be totally miserable doing that kind of flying. Nothing against the guys that do it, the planes, the companies, etc. It's just not my thing, just like some of the freight dawgs don't wanna fly for the regionals.

I do have to say, I breathed a small sigh of relief when I got that temp ATP cert the other day. At least I've got that done now.....

I'd try to get a job as a ramper for SWA in Chicago. Seriously. Then I'd try to find a part-time instructing job so I could keep flying.

There is a PC-12 gig about 7 miles from my house that I tried to get on with before I came to the 121 world. I would try again in a heartbeat.

Also, I am considering teaching at a local college as well. Being home every night and have summers off sounds pretty good to me.

Outside the box is good. Gotta keep my building my small side businesses up as well :)

The best advice I ever received as far as steady income/job hiccups is....

#1 - you have to work for yourself to make real money and truly get ahead

#2 - you need at minimum 2-3 separate streams of income (side jobs, side business, investments, etc.)

Just my .02 because I certainly know my current employer is not immune to anything. Always have Plan B, C, D, E, etc. :)

Hey, Zap...

I'm NOT kidding about Costco. I've got a friend who works there. Its not a bad gig!

Honestly, soooo many of my friends have talked of going to WalMart/Costco/Home Depot if/when they get furloughed. I can just see it now.

"Do you guys have Purdy paint brushes?"

"I dunno. Go ask my CA in paint department..."

lol

if i lost my job i'd try to go a place like airnet or some other scheduled cargo company. or look for a corp gig.

if none of those worked, be back behind the bar getting people drunk.

If I were still in Orlando, this would be me, too. Although with the house bubble almost totally burst in Florida, it would be the perfect excuse to move back.....

Go back working for Marriott.

You used to work for the marriott too? Thats the best company I have every worked for. I was with them for 5 years, they really know how to take care of their own.

IF i got furloughed, a good number of my friends own their own business, and I would probably go to work for them. I also found out a friend of mine just got offered an executive position for some jet charter company in NYC. So I would definitely hit him up. ha

Excellent piece of writing Zap.

Not sure what I would do. Most likely live my true dream; formulate a dual action colon cleanse and sell it on late night television to insomniacs. Or maybe sell Amway. Seriously though, probably check out some corporate gigs and then polish up my non aviation resume and try to find a so called real job.

I was there part time from December 2002 to May 2005. Awesome company to work for, great job, and met some great people there. I was a bartender, what did you do?

What didn't I do? I worked, room service cashier, restaurant host, restaurant cashier, Restaurant server, service bartender, pool bartender, and I even did an internship in housekeeping.

If you get furloughed and decide to apply at another regional rather than wait for recall, does/can/will your new regional require you to give up your recall rights as a condition of employment?

I can't speak for other regionals but Colgan doesn't require it. I flew with a furloughed Comair FO who was waiting to get the call to go back to Comair. Ultimately, he decided to stay at Colgan when the call did come.

AFAIK AWAC requires you resign your number.

As always excellent read Zap! Im on reserve with so much time off Im going back to waiting tables at nights to have a 2nd paycheck. The first paycheck is free money since i never work:D

And if your company is worth a damn, they will recognize that these resignations were made under duress and still call you back when it's your turn for recall.
