XJT Rejects SKW's Takeover Bid

Why is that always such a big deal for everyone?

I could see if the management is running the company into the ground that they shouldn't be getting bonuses, but SkyWest management have done a lot for their company and their employees. I would think they deserve bonuses.

They deserve bonuses, but it's the dollar figure that is the problem. No one deserves multi-millions in bonuses and options every year. Atkin has received hundreds of thousands of stock options over the years. Not to mention millions in bonuses.

Good for him, i'm very happy for him and he deserves them. He's made an airline that started with one light tiwn in the 70s to the largest most profitable regional in the world. He has managed to fight off three union drives and all the while still has managed to respect his employees.

According to Scott Trade he's sold $7.7 million or so in stock over the last 5 years, that's around $1.5 million per year. His last annual salary was reported at $355,000 in 2007. A quick search showed him receiving a little over 1,000,000 stock options that year, but 300,000 were "unexercisable", whatever that means.

He's got considerable equity in the company, it's in his best interest to grow the company. Seems to me his interest is aligned with the employee group. He's been there over 30 years and grown the company. Contrast that with AWAC's owners who walked away with ~$450 million last year alone. But they put their money at risk into US Airways.

Because that's really something to be proud of. . . from a pilot's point of view.

Surreal why do you like to rain on others parade?

I don't see any light drizzle anywhere, much less rain showers.

I wonder that myself, considering they havn't even finished their training at their first airline yet.

That has something to do with having an opinion about the increasing size of regional (holding) companies?

One doesn't have to look too far to see what getting too big for your pants will do to you and your company - Mesa. Especially in $110-115bbl oil economy.

I'd be locking the hatches pretty damn good and sitting it out with the two companies that are successful instead of trying to purchase a company that already has some issues (no offense XJT guys).

People know I dislike Skywest WAY more then I dislike Mesa, but the two really aren't comparable as far as their leadership goes. JO has a history of treating his employees badly and doing anything to make some more profit. Atkin has, so far anyways, treated his employees (as a group) pretty well, and has paid somewhat industry standard wages. I completly disagree with the "override" pay, but other then that, they are about where everybody else is, both in pay and QOL. That's certainly not a hallmark of JO style leadership.

In the same vein, should JO be proud to have made so much money off the backs of pilots at Mesa?

Of Course, he deserves it! :sarcasm:

I see a lot of talk of comparing the CEO's to each other. Know that I didn't mean that by comparing them, but rather, as a regional holding company owning or operating a large fleet of aircraft for up to three different customers may not be the greatest thing for our profession, especially when one (Mesa) is not in the greatest financial position right now. Flying in Hawaii, Flying in China. . .flying into the ground as a company?

Hence my comment of locking down the Skywest Inc. hatches and trying to minimize future losses instead of acquiring another company who flies for another "customer."

But am I'm sure that could be viewed as raining on someone's parade.

Ooh aviation internet trench warfare!

"One last push! When the whistle blows, the phosgene should have reached the hun's lines, the second whistle, over the parapets we go! We'll be home before the leaves fall! To arms!"

Jesus, you people are never happy. You're pissed at management when they do a bad job, and now apparently you're pissed when they're doing a good job.

Speaking of bonuses...wonder if the ALPA chiefs got bonuses on top of their nearly half-mil annual income...(salary & others).
