Anyone think Dubai doesn't look good?

What's driving all of that construction? Do that many people want to live in that climate? Isn't it pure desert? I just don't get it.

Also where does Dubai/UAE get it's money from? Is the country involved in the oil trade?
 
They are the oil trade. Dubai has a HUGE amount of oil reserves, but they do not have much left. So the ruler decided to invest ALL of the countries HUGE profit into developing a new economy: Tourism. It seems to be working too. I have been to Dubai and a few other places in UAE. It is actually quite pleasant.
 
One wish I have is to live long enough in this world to see oil run out. I wonder what in the hell that region is going to do. What else do they have to offer to the world?

On a side note I would love to live in Dubai, maybe for a year or so just for the experience. It looks beautiful.

Wow, just amazing all the development going on out there. That's the place to be right now.

On that note, anyone at Netjets know if Netjets International is seeing a lot of business in Dubai right now? I'd assume with all this development they must be. Is Dubai a base for Netjets International?

just got back from dxb friday. Dubai has virtually no oil compared to other gulf countries. They have founded their expansion mainly from their free trade zone they operate. going back in two weeks. if you've got money to invest, nows the time.

compared to 1988 when we first moved there, it looks likew vegas of the 50's and the vegas of now(times a thousand) except it virtually happend in less than 10 years, the majority of it being from 2001-present.
 
Dubai is a very cool place...I just flew a Falcon over there last NOV. for the Dubai Airshow. I was lucky enough to stay there for about a week, those buildings downtown at night make you feel like your in a Sci-fi batman gothim city type movie. Its somthing i'll never forget.
 
I don't see how this could be successful. With the amount of money going into these projects, the risk has to be astronomical. I don't think there are enough people in the world who will want to live there and the tourism business won't thrive if there are a bunch of rundown 100 story apartment buildings.

And really...who reasonably thinks "oh, we'll build an amusement park twice as big as Disney World and we'll attract twice as many people."

On a lighter note, it does look cool. I'd love to visit it before it's deserted
 
It's a huge resort place for people from places other then the US. It is already hugely popular with European, Asian, and African travelers. Now they just need to get more Americans over there and it would be a world-wide sought after destination.

I hope chevy has the volt in production, and plug-in hybrids are here, or the question is what will we do? I saw last week where airbus was doing test on biodiesel jet fuel. Oil will not ever run out totally, (or ersatz oil from shale, trop fischer conversion, thermal depolymerization) but we are definitely at peak oil and it will have to make up a smaller piece of the pie. As some pundits say, we are funding both sides of the war on terror at the pump.

Looks like they produce a large amount of oil as well. At their current rate of production they still have almost 100 years of oil production left.

Here's the kicker - they aren't waiting for those oil wells to dry up! Imagine that. They are putting money into solar production to take advantage of their year round sunny climate. A government with forward thinking...man I wonder what that would be like here?
 
That is some pretty interesting stuff. It's kind of funny how it lists one building as the future tallest, then it lists the next one as being taller than the previous, then it does it again!
