Best Degree

With all the uncertainty in the airline biz, there's probably nothing wrong with wanting a back up plan.. I definatly don't think it's super important though. A degree is a degree. It's not going to matter much what it's in.

There are other ways to make yourself hirable other than worthless degrees is what I'm saying. My primary focus is what I want to do with my life though.
Obviously I want to be a pilot but I already have contacts and I want a backup plan incase something with my vision goes wrong.

Only, ONLY do a degree you're interested in.

I made the mistake of letting myself get talked into taking aviation management when I really wasn't interested in it. I'm completely interested in it now, but it took me two years of switching majors back and forth and now busting my butt just to graduate a semester late because of it.

I don't know...but I've become a big believer that it's not about the degree but more of WHO you know. I like to think that a prime example of this is my sister, amazing at networking IMO, who has a VERY well-paying job for her age and never finished college (for x amount of reasons).

I think there are other ways to succeed in life rather than having some random degree. It does give you an upper edge by being able to "check the box" but if you've been flying for X years, you've probably lost a ton of knowledge/experience in your backup degree anyway which wouldn't really make you qualified for a good job other than some generic entry-level job in the field.

Blah....kinda going off on a tangent.

:yeahthat:

...and TXAviator is someone else who I'd like to think has something on the side as a backup, mind you with liveable earnings compared to entry-level aviation. I don't think you can go to college for a degree in what he does, something enjoyable. It's all about networking, I say.

I can appreciate this view point. I guess what it really comes down to with me I guess, is I want to do lots of other things outside of being a commercial pilot. Mostly driving type things, but I would like to run some kind of side business someday as well. So a basic business degree works best for me. Obviously it probably won't do much good if I ever want to work for someone else, but I don't plan on doing that ever except for being a pilot. :)

So I guess the decision is Aviation Management because that will give me job opportunities other than a pilot incase that falls through?

no it will not.

an AVIATION management degree looks the same as a commercial AVIATION degree to anyone in the business world...if they see the word aviation, its the same thing to them. they could care less that it is a bachelor of business instead of a bachelor of science.

what you actually get your degree in is becoming less important

like the previous post said...worry about having fun in college. If you played a sport in high school, walk on to a collegiate team here at UND. The extracurriculars will set you apart and give you more connections around campus.

major in education (best girl to guy ratio on campus, trust me)...and will look great if you want to flight instruct....and come to UND!!...the people here rock!

Yeah, my post wasn't targeted at anyone, I actually didn't read most of this thread, but I hear you on what you mean!
Call me crazy, but I kinda wanted to minor in nutrition but never got around to doing so...

Moral of the story/thread/discussion: Major in what you enjoy. :)

Off-topic alert: Is that YOUR Honda in your avatar? The one with the painted-over cancer all over it? There really aren't too many other cars similar to it around town, so I have to ask. I see that things everywhere, and it cracks me up every time :laff:.

I think you're the only one who can say what degree is best. There is nothing wrong with getting a degree in an aviation field (B.A. Airline Management, etc.) if you want to be a pilot. A degree in a field other than aviation just broadens your options a bit if you should ever find yourself out of work during a time when the aviation market is saturated with jobs

If you do decide to get a degree in something other than aviation, I highly recommend it in subject area you enjoy. I originally majored in Business because I thought it could make me a lot of money. I took a few Political Science classes to fullfill my gen ed requirements and loved it. So I changed my major my second semester.

I'd love to know too. The late 80/early 90s Preludes were some of the best. My dad had an '89 Prelude 2.0si in Red and it developed my love for cars, especially Hondas.

LMAO!!!! YES, the painted-over cancer! You should drive it some time. I love seeing people rip on the $500 car but love it when they drive it. It's not fast by any means but boy is it FUN to drive. If you've never driven anything w/ 4WS, you're invited.

edit: btw...it was the previous owner who was stupid enough to spray paint the rust. Yuck.

I think I've picked up on cars after I bought this '88 Prelude 2.0Si 4WS. The thing is pretty fun to drive, NOT automatic, and fast enough to have fun with. I never thought I'd enjoy driving so much, but the truth is I probably wouldn't be enjoying it if it weren't for this little toy.
My car was down for two weeks and had to borrow a friend's Oldsmobile Eighty Eight. It wasn't too pleasing sailing the sea with that boat.

You do learn more with older cars which you have to often troubleshoot.

I see a few Preludes around town. I believe there was a red '89 Prelude 2.0Si for sale here a while back, but it was russssssty, like mine. A few others in town, but they're mostly automatic, uggggh......

Well, now that the topic is on cars finally, does anyone know if there is a law in Grand Forks that makes the underbody neon lights illegal? I sent the police department an email more than a week ago asking, but I got no response. I know some places just don't care about them but in others you'll get a ticket.

Oh yeah I saw a car on University a few nights ago with the underbody neons. Of course it had a spoiler to match. :laff:

On a different note, is it legal to drive while talking on a cell phone? In Washington State it's illegal and I don't want to get a ticket in ND because of that.

I'm almost positive that it isn't a problem here to talk on a cell phone. I never knew that it was actually illegal in some states.

Yeah it's actually a new law in WA too. I know for sure that it's illegal in the SW area, (Vancouver etc), I'm not 100% positive on the rest of the state. It might just be the SW area.

Haha, man I would love to drive it. Being a relatively new transfer student living off-campus has resulted in el-boredom as of late, so that would be awesome :nana2:. Wanna just PM me or somethin?

You bought your car for $500 really? Because that is a heckuva sweet deal. And for the painted over rust---If you can't see it, it doesn't exist :)
