Not to sure what to make of this

Let me preface this by saying we have a very young pilot group, a pilot group with a good bunch of guys and gals, nothing personal against them.

Was talking to a crew scheduler the other day; they have had some younger First Officers turn down trips because they had to finish their homework for last minute class deadlines for their online classes.

The company is dumbfounded about this. Usually you have problems with staffing restaurants because the young wait staff has exams, school work etc. Not airline pilots.

This is a picture perfect example/reason why you should get your degree BEFORE going to the airlines......

just my opinion...

Option 1: The company eventually fires thher pilots learn to take their job a little more seriously.

Option 2: The company huffs and puffs but really does nothing about it. Result is the trend continues or gets worse as people learn that they can get away with this attitude.

WOW !!! :laff: is it possible to ask crew scheduling to find a hotel at layover with milk and cookies, possible a bed time story? :p

So, wait - Colgan can take disciplinary action against you if you refuse extra flying that wasn't awarded to you?

Are these pilots dropping trips because they have other things to do, or is scheduling unable to properly staff the schedule, and pilots are refusing to make up for the company's inability to manage itself?

Might be one of those 'inverse assignment' things.

If crew scheduling catches me on my day off for an inverse assignment and I pick up the phone, I'm going flying unless I have extenuating circumstances like "Just finished off a Franziskaner, ma'am" or child care.

Which is why I don't pick up the phone when it says "unknown caller".

I try and pickup a trip or 2 every month. I like to make a few extra bucks. Sometimes I need my 3 days off though, but I've never heard of anyone using the ''homework" excuse. Yes, I'd agree it's due to the companies inability to manage itself that people are refusing trips. Sometimes you get screwed pretty bad by picking up an extra trip.

YEP! Unless you want to earn some extra money, one phone for the company, and, one for your friends.....

If they have any organizational skillz this shouldn't happen though... Nothing wrong with getting a degree while they are working.

Glad someone said it...

Not saying that there is anything wrong with it, but if someone was to ask me if this is waht they should do I would strongly recommend GOING to college before starting your career so things like what Seggy is talking about doesnt happen.....

Normally, in the past, pilots had their degrees before joining the airlines, so, depending on the scheduler, they may be surprised by the homework concept.

I worked scheduling with the airlines, here are a couple of good reasons why pilots were unable to pick up open trips:

1. Scheduled to be in court (the pilot was a Divorce Attorney)
2. Piano recital (pilot was a professional pianist)
3. Had a drink (pilot forgot that he was on reserve & was drinking)
4. I had a F/E that tried to turn down trips on his reserve days, he owned 3 Retirement homes & did not like to be away.
5. Another pilot was living with his ex-wife & did not like her to be home alone as she would bring men over....

Isn't that what the autopilot is for?? :)

That was it.

Scheduling called and told them they needed to fly a day. One guy said that, "he had a project due for one of his online classes and couldn't do it."

Has happened to more than one guy at the company though.

Maybe if you guys didn't fly turboprops and got REAL airplanes....

The Doubletree has cookies (get your own milk). . . and you can order the bedtime story on the TV menu:D (just hit the yellow button)

By the way I go to school online, and I do most of my homework in the hotel. I wish I'd have completed my degree before I came on line.

Well, I have to say that if I was on my off time, and the company called me wanting to pick up a trip - and I'm occupied - I'm not going to take it.

Now, if I was scheduled to fly, then obviously I'd fly. . .I won't make up a reason to not goto work.

Also, if on reserve. . .I'd also go fly. But, like I said, if I'm in my off time and the company calls me. . .I'm not picking up the spot. They need to hire more crews.
