Aviation in 5 years

Could someone please give me their opinion on how the job outlook looks for pilots in 5 years?

Will the possibility of getting on with a regional with under 1,000 hours still be there?

Thank you for your help.:)

I'm sure it will. It doesn't look like the regionals will get better anytime soon.

Aviation in 5 years...
Well, with globally increasing demands for oil and less oil being recovered, we will see much higher gas prices. This will in turn lead to much higher training costs. However! As either the current or following administrations are finally able to pass user fees for GA, the death of GA will be a sad one. What pilots in the US will be doing is attending ab-initio programs such as those featured in Europe.

OR

We will be run by China, India, Russia or all three.

Let my just pull my crystal ball out.........

People on here have been saying its over blah blah blah when I started reading here in 2003. but look at now it seems as if the airline industry is recovering. Also read what John H posted, saying the airline of now can be gone tommorw etc..... my answer in simple terms: who knows? all you can do is pray and work hard.

Or we'll be hit by a meteor, or ostrich flu will eliminate 50% of the human race, or ipods take over the world.

Or life will continue as it has been for the most part (far fetched, I know!).

This is true.

On a side note, locally, they are preparing to use the fair grounds as a mass burial for the expected 10,000 projected to die from the bird flu!

Could I have tomorrow's winning lottery numbers while your at it...
Anyones guess. Put yourself in position for changes and always have your resume updated.

Ebb and flow...

More of the same.

Periods of feast and famine for pilots.

And there's always some turkey with a new airline trying to re-invent the wheel.

Will the possibility of getting on with a regional with under 1,000 hours still be there?

Maybe so, maybe not. See above! :)

To add to that. Seniority doesn't mean everything if you don't get hired at the right airline. Really, timing and luck are everything. That just doesn't sound as good at the ATP ad in Flight Training mag, but it's the truth.

I think you're right... but... since we won't really know if we got hired at the "right" airline until... ummm... maybe retirement... then... all things being equal... I'll shoot for seniority and hope for the best. ;)

Bob

PS: I'll take a little luck too!

"PS: I'll take a little luck too!"

If ExpressJet doesn't work out, you're gonna need it.

Perfect example why seniority isn't always everything.

Well... fortunately... I've got some pretty good seniority...

All of the branded flying could disappear and those planes could all go to the desert... and I'd still have a job. Not that I want that to happen in any way... but... just an example of how seniority helps. :)

So... I would have to argue just the opposite... that's a perfect example of why seniority can very well be of great importance.

Bob

Yeah, tell that to the Mesaba or Comair guys. They were the regional of choice long before Xjet. Or ACA/Flyi. You pick the wrong one and you're screwed.

Seniority is nice, but it's not the end all, be all. And saying "seniority is everything so get hired now by spending "X" dollars ASAP to get there fast" is a marketing tactic I have a problem with. Guys buy off on it without a full understanding of the industry.

It's an "extreme" statement... I'll certainly give you that.

But... it's certainly not something to de-value either.

You say... "pick the wrong one and you're screwed." If it's all a roll of the dice anyway, then go for the seniority and hope for the best.

My example holds true if we dissolve the branded flying... and if we loose another 25% of CAL's flying which can't happed for another 3 years based on our contract. By that time... then I'll have moved up even more in seniority and will be able to stand another 3 year drop of 25%.

Now... if we go out of business overnight... another 9/11 happens... the economy tanks, etc... then... well... like I said... It's all a crapshoot. :)

Even out of those that went to Mesaba, Comair, ACA/FlyI, etc... I'm sure that a majority percentage went to those jobs with a full understanding of the industry. It worked for some... for other's it didn't. Those with seniority kept their jobs or seats longer... and possibly were able to move upward and onward before the things got bad.

For now though... I'm totally diggin' my seniority... and still wishing it was higher. ;)

Bob

"and if we loose another 25% of CAL's flying which can't happed for another 3 years based on our contract"

Contract? HAHA....I remember when DL had a no furlough clause in their contract...

It's no thing, Capt Bob, I see where you're coming from and agree with it. It's all a crapshoot, as you said. My problem is they don't really mention that at the ATP/DCA/FSA/PanAm/RAA ads.
