The Payback Day Massacre

For those of us playing the home version of the game, what does PWA stand for?

Oh, "Pilot Working Agreement"

FSP: "Flight Standards Pilot" - LCP's, LVP's
LCP: "Line Check Pilot"
LVP: "Line Validation Pilot" - FO's that serve as "nurse practitioners" doing light work like theater qualifications.

Basically SJI has to be different and use non-standard acronyms and verbiage for just about everything.

Well, yeah and no. :)

Hear me out! :)

Considering the airline is over a century old, maybe it's the rest of the industry that changed the vernacular? :) You know, the British saying "Theatre" and "Colour" while we Americans say "Theater" and "Color" then tell the Brits they're being obstinate and weird.

That mutual agreement has lasted years. Why do you think management has suddenly made an about face?

Rhetorical question, of course. We all know the answer.

Money. Pure and simple.

In another division I moonlight in, not directly in Flight Ops, one of the managing directors said "You're expensive" and I said "You're damned right I am. Find someone less expensive with cross-divisional expertise AND flies an airplane... which I go to work and generate the revenue that drives the airline, just what do YOU do?"

"I was just making a joke"

"I was literally about to quit, tell you there's no transition binder and how I'll be more expensive when you beg me to come back"

"Man, you got triggered quick!"

"I'm a 'steal'"

The problem is that when you have the courage to speak truth to power, you tend to pick up a lot of interesting opportunities, and I tend to want to do them all.

A few more thoughts on this, since I currently have a cat in my lap and cannot move.

The washing of PB days and using 23.M.7 to get paid and stay at home are things I could consider negotiating away. For something pretty juicy to be sure, that'd benefit a larger amount of the pilot group. Notice I said negotiate and not unilaterally taken by the company. I think once this settles, the union should win on the argument about the SRH and past practice being valid and this dumb move by management was in fact not legit.

I grew up in & around trade unions (still proud to have my carpenter's card and very wee pension) and if any of those guys would work the system to stay home, get paid and not show up to work they'd likely get punched or ran off the job once they returned. Maybe I see things a bit different but these two examples don't help the 'spoiled' pilot mantra, but that's the beauty of having contractual language that works in your favor. If management wants to get rid of it, it should and will cost them a pretty penny.

We clearly need some new & better leadership on the 4th floor, this example and others like the NYC CPO putting out a laughable comm on sick leave abuse is regional-esque and bush-league type shenanigans.

Something kind of weird is going on in NY. But then, it seems like new people governing new people and if you showed them a picture of a NWA DC-9, they'd probably wonder how a rap group got their name on the side of that 717 with the weird tiny engines on it… But first it's time for a selfie, Skylar… Tell me about your workout regimen?

I’d not accuse my fellow pilots of anything, but I’ve also never heard a peep in 2 years about calling in sick which I do when I’m…you know…sick. Just did it a few days ago as a matter of fact
