EWR radios and radar fail again

FAA felt there were too many un-utilized slots to justify it being slot controlled

Do you believe that in the current environment now it would be helpful? Honest question, I really don’t know from a ATC prospective if that’s a potential fix, or if it wouldn’t really solve some of the issues in the airspace.

I was extremely interested in proprioceptive development and occupational therapy they gave my son to help his class room performance. I don’t doubt we were more perceptive to the treatment model because I had an understanding of the proprioceptive system.

My wife couldn’t get what was being discussed until explaining in a way she understood if you’re using active brain power for something a simple as balance, that brain power is unavailable to regulate behavior. 14 weeks and there was observable difference.

A decade or two ago they’d have just taken the recommended dosage and dialed it up some more.
Therapy made a world of difference with my kid who has ADHD. He had a lot of behavioral issues, especially at school. He doesn't take medication, although he did for a short while.

So you’ve given me one non-answer and then quoted a FAA website the second time. You’ve been so helpful and your insight has been invaluable.
my brother in posts it takes about three minutes to read the whole “why,” if you want to just have a message board conversation with a controller then my fault I’ll keep the primary sources off the board

Just wanted to say that I did a graveyard turn on Fri. Night -> Sat morning... Red Eye Transcon to EWR (Self DH home on the same plane) and it was smooth as can be. (Except for the whole not sleeping in a bed for 39 hours...) Got in without a problem. (Other than LA or ABQ giving us dir. SLT and having ORD and CLE take that away) I was totally shocked. Actually, the airport seemed crazy slow. No lines at all, no alley traffic... nothing. It was fun to show my FO the RNAV to 29 - I'm sure he enjoyed my old man story about how "back in my day" the last time there was construction... we didn't have the RNAV capability, blah, blah... visual... fly uphill both ways...

Currently watching Secretary Road Rules’ press conference. I am moderately impressed by his willingness to speak to dumbed-down technical topics, acknowledge a triage approach and generally avoided kept sound bite responses separate from specifics.

That said, he’s gonna stay Sec. Road Rules because he leaned heavy into “this is all Biden’s fault!!” Unfortunately, that is probably the prudent approach to getting fast funding (versus saying “y’all been starving this mule for decades).

I tuned-in towards the end so I didn’t what was said about ATC or airlines; mainly technology talk.

Everything he said is •.

Yeah, what @NovemberEcho said. He also failed to mention that the plan to move the Newark sector radar controllers to PHL was hatched during the first Trump administration and the reason it sucks is because career FAA bureaucrats rushed the move so that it could happen before NATCA or anyone else could prevent it from happening. NATCA did delay it for years.

Rinaldi was in on it from the beginning and sold us out. And supposedly, from fairly reliable sources, the FAA initially offered a bigger incentive package than what we actually got but NATCA shot it down.
Wish I could say I was surprised, I wonder what kick-backs he got.

Would you consider deferring retirement to 61 or wait to see these new changes before making such a commitment?

The controllers I know can't wait to punch out and move on with their retirement, they're not interested in staying a minute longer than necessary.

I have long planned to punch out asap and lately even if that means I still need to get a job afterward. I recently found out I'll have enough time to qualify for a special retirement package if I stay till I'm 55. That is very tempting, especially coupled with the 20% bonus we are supposed to get. At the end of the day though, for me, it's going to boil down to my present work culture when I become eligible.

Edit: if I had been eligible I would have retired in February

That’s basically what one of my friends said. Their quilts for butterflies business hasn’t taken off yet, but when it does - they’re out of there and going to be featured on International House Hunters.

Hell no. I’m planning on going to 56 just because my daughter happens to turn 18 when I turn 56. Hopefully some financial windfall comes and I can go at 50. And frankly, no ATC in any kind of busy environment should be going past 56 because the decline is real.

Controllers working on Age Waivers are in general super scary.

I hope y'all have TCAS because if Duffy's plan is for a bunch of 59-61 year olds to be working a Red Sector by themselves......you're gonna need it.

Is there still a need for ATA's? I think it was before my time but there was a time when furloughed airline pilots came and worked as ATA's until they got recalled.

I've heard of ATAs, but I have never seen one in my 14 year career. I think they stopped doing that a few years before I was hired.

I think a couple centers still have one or two old guys doing ATA but it’s not a position they hire for anymore
