Pilot maneuvers plane to give passengers ‘amazing’ view of northern lights

That’s pretty cool. I imagine there was some Scrooge on board who was pissed off, and certainly all the window shades were down anyway. But that’s a nice gesture

Are they NATS up there? I'd guess that was more Spruce Route territory. If so it's pretty easy to coordinate something like that. I wouldn't want to try it on the NATS or with KZAK (or even worse Tokyo).

Truth. No 360s on the tracks. KEF to Euroland isn't a track and technically still in radar contact and VHF.

Just out of curiosity, how would most of your shops respond to something like? BFD or no BFD?

I was wondering the same thing. The pilot is either an amazing brand ambassador to all Easy Jet pilots or the former employee known as the Northern Lights pilot.

They're probably random if they're that far north.

Todays NATS:

I'd assume Captain "Northern Lights" Norm is a hero with the positive free press the airline got. Couldn't have bought that kind of advertisement on the Super Bowl.

In 1978 a local business stepped up from a Golden Eagle to a single pilot Citation. Insurance required a second pilot when the owner was on board and they paid me to sit in the right seat and be eye candy. A lot of contrails one day and the owner asked if we were making one. When the pilot said he didn't know the owner insisted on making a 360 to find out. ABQ Centers response was; Right or Left?

Done the “Bay Tour” out of SFO a few times, pretty cool. Not sure if it’s allowed anymore…

I was just going to bring this up. Isn’t the departure clearance basically get yourself to the Golden Gate Bridge then depart the Golden Gate Bridge heading XYZ or something?

Paging @ChasenSFO I wanna say the Mexicana pilots loved it and would request it?

We do it pretty regularly when taking off northbound from OAK. They normally keep you at some altitude below 3000 (I've been given as low as 1500) and let you fly directly towards Alcatraz and then out through the center of the gate. You let them know when you are done and they'll give you higher and direct BAART or something like that.

A few of our jets did it not too long ago, led by a Ukrainian American in the backseat of the lead jet. His comments before walking out to the jets were amazing. Something along the lines of [insert heavy eastern euro accent] “we go there, we cancel, we do VFR, we fly home” and apparently it went (surprisingly) along those lines.

One time from IAD to LGA, and for what reason I can't remember, but ATC said that they were going vector us around Manhattan .(and we did we went north about 10-15 miles turned west and then went south following the Hudson and the got vectored for the visual to 4. a big counterclockwise circle around Manhattan.) So I got on the PA and told the passengers that they were going to get a "tour" of Manhattan. When those New Yorkers deplaned not a single one seemed appreciative. I think I got a couple of" F the F'n tour. "
