Hawaiian Severe Turbulence

As of now 36 injured, 11 in pretty bad shape (including cabin crew). Some of the pictures of the cabin damage are crazy.

Don't be late, penetrate.

"We believe the flight may have gone through a thunderstorm, which may have caused the severe turbulence,” said NWS meteorologist Genki Kino.

If I'm guessing correctly, based on ADS-B data, it looks to have happened just prior to TOD (about 7ish minutes before, to be exact). Aircraft was at FL400 and descended about 500 feet, reporting vertical speeds between -2000 and -3000 fpm. Then it climbed back to FL400. There was a PIREP submitted a few minutes later, as well, after the descent started:
HNL UUA /OV OGG020065/TM 2016/FL360/TP A332/TB SEV

A dig through the radar archives for PHMO in Molokai shows scattered, but potentially intense thunderstorms, with tops (generously) going to about FL350, in the area. So they would have been dodging weather, but don't appear to have flown directly through/over it. I suppose that system turned out to create much more severe turbulence than the dispatcher and pilots expected.

It's good that everyone will recover, at least.

Normally pilot flying... but sometimes the first FA because they are tired of people wandering around and bothering them in the galley.

Grrrr. If they wanted the FAs to have the seat belt sign, it would also have been installed in the galley panel. I’m not a fan of using the seat belt sign in a calm sky as a weapon to clear the aisles, unless a security issue and/or emergency.

I don't think you're a bad captain, but your "Id" is oddly over-dominant.

Feelin' a little Freudian this morning.

Meh. I don’t think forum talk translates to real life in a straight/linear fashion.

And if anything, my issues for about the first ~2 yrs as CA was being too much a nice guy, and not CA enough. Now 4 yrs into the gig, I’ve learned to not be like that. Nice guy yes, but where needs be to put the CA hat on and not feel bad/guilty about it.

Even with the seat belt sign on in cruise, how many people are often seated with the belt off anyway…..probably a number.

Warning: Blood / graphic

But seriously, I’d have an issue with some insta • walking around a plane filming injuries. I’m the fool though cause I posted this.

I'd suggest looking up the terms "Id, Ego, Super Ego"
