Aircraft Down in San Diego (Dec 27)

Just listened to what was described as final ATC comms.

After being cleared to land 17, cancelled IFR and requested 27. Cleared for 27R. Asked for lights to be turned up. Was advised lights at 100%. Profanity five seconds later.

Disturbing, to say the least.
I suspect the YouTuber added the profanity at the end.

I checked the audio from LiveATC, it's there. Wish I hadn't.

I did the exact same thing, and I wish I hadn’t also.

This one also hits very close to home and I’ve personally observed the accident aircraft over the last few days and chuckled at their similar circling antics (safely in VMC). These guys were clearly very capable pilots and loved short approaches, but tonight was not a good night for it. The flightaware track gets as low as 750 ft MSL towards a 1000 ft mountain just east of the field, and field elevation is 388 ft.

Category C minimums on the RNAV (GPS) Rwy 17 are 1360-3, and they cancelled IFR to use runway 27R instead. Runway length available was Rwy 17 4145x100 vs. Rwy 27R 5342x100. Any Lear 35 drivers know if Rwy 17 would have been an option with wind variable at 5 kts?

Firefighters found no survivors at the scene, authorities said in a news release. They did not specify how many victims were found. No one was hurt on the ground, the sheriff's department said in a news release. The medical examiner will investigate and identify the victims once family members have been notified.
The sheriff's department said the plane was a Learjet, and authorities are uncertain how many people were on board, CNN affiliate KGTV reported. One home was damaged and power lines were knocked down in the area, the sheriff's department said.

Wow, appears cause of death was to avoid a long taxi. I’m sure many would have done the same thing.

In the graphic below you can see one of the hills inigo spoke of.

From another public "forum" so take it for what its worth.....

"17 is 4145ft long. The company SOP is 5000ft minimum. Thus 27 or 9."

"Let's just say I have very personal, specific, and negative experience with this dumbass procedure at this field, at night, in a Lear, for this specific company.

I refused the Chief Pilot's order to to do it and circled to RW9 instead."

That, uh, doesn't sound too good.

Call me a • if you want, but circling at night in a jet, mvfr, in hilly terrain, with no lateral or vertical guidance, is not my idea of a good time. I know BACK IN MY DAY CIRCLING NDB MILITARY BOMBING TERRISTS REAL PILOTS LEARN TO FLY AND I VOTED NO, but IMO screw that approach.

Almost like there's a reason 121 operators don't perform circling approaches.
