Kalitta flies US evacuees back from China

I really don't understand the FAA. They will come at an airline for the most trivial and random things but allow this to happen. There are plenty of charterable passenger aircraft out there, no reason to allow waivers for this kind of stuff.

The FAA didn't ask anyone to do this flight...they just gave the waivers...

Huh...I wonder who flies that mission also. I think they got a red and gold stripe on their airplane and they have a contract with some Alphabet organization down in ATL.

You mean, grey with a black stripe.

"There are only two jets in the world with the current system, and we own both of them," said Dent Thompson, vice president of Phoenix Air, which has served as the airlift provider for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for about 8 years.

That article makes it sound like Phoenix Air subcontracted K4 for the aircraft. No where does it mention that K4 has a contract with CDC.

I’m not going to argue over contracts. My point is they have done this before and will probably do it in the future. Being an operation that understands the risks of doing these flights and prepared to undertake this mission is more important then having enough flight attendants plus 1 or windows for them to look out.

I don't know what the big deal is. It's freaking simple.
Just take 800mg Motrin, drink water, and change your damn socks! That magical combination cures and fixes E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G, including the coronavirus.

All this nonsense for a few people feeling ill in Chiner yet 20 million Americans and alike already have “the flu” here already. This is ridiculous. The USA flu has killed more than this Whohan flu.

On a somewhat more serious note, I'm no pharmacist, but the Russian (btw Russia did close the border with China over this) cocktail for those potentially infected is an interesting mix of general virus suppressor, HIV meds and multiple sclerosis meds

Seriously. Swine flu killed 200,000 people. This is a cold. Bad for old people with pre-existing conditions. This isn't TEOTWAWKI.

Not really a great apples-to-apples comparison. The mortality rate for Swine Flu (H1N1) was "only" 0.02%, making it not even particularly dangerous by influenza standards. The death toll got so high because, like most influenza strains, it became extremely widespread (approximately 100 million cases).

In terms of viral structure, rate of contagion, and rate of mortality, the Wuhan "novel coronoavirus" (NCoV) more resembles the SARS and MERS outbreaks (also coronavirus strains). Thankfully, at a current mortality rate of approximately 2%, it is apparently not as deadly as either SARS (9.6%) or MERS (35%). As you would figure, the reason SARS and MERS both ended up with much lower total death tolls than H1N1 was due to the *much* smaller populations infected: 8098 and 2499, respectively.

Now, the big difference: The SARS outbreak lasted nine months. MERS has been identified for over six years. As of this writing, lab-confirmed worldwide total for NCoV infection is 7824 in less than one month. Ongoing infection rates suggesting we are at the beginning of the outbreak, rather than the end.

What we appear to have is a coronavirus strain with unprecedented levels of infectiousness. It is cause for increased caution and a globally-coordinated response. It is not cause for American citizens to be stranded in Wuhan with no ability to repatriate, thus the unlikely application of cargo 747s from Ypsilanti. It is ALSO not cause for a cartoonish internet s**tstorm, but recent history suggests we're going to have one of those for damn near everything for the foreseeable future.

(Source on most of my numbers was European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, if anyone's wondering)

Swine flu had a mortality rate of about .02%. The Coronavirus has a mortality rate of around 2%.

2% of those seeking treatment, who have an average age of 59. What's the mortality rate of people admitted to hospital with with pneumonia not associated with Coronavirus? Or the rate when we include the majority of cases. Those who have a cold, take Motrin and never seek any form of treatment?
