Why...

A lot of my reasoning for this comes from personal experience. 7AM departure and you’ve got a stick shaker activating as soon as you’re WOW and the stall system thinks you’re less than a couple knots above a stall and there are simultaneous parallel departures and arrivals. Pulling breakers and avoiding traffic is always fun right? Now imagine some sort of compounding failure.

We fall to the level of our training. In the sim we fly a standard profile almost exclusively. If you utilize that profile in/out of very busy airspace it will decrease your workload in the event of an emergency. And it will allow the other pilot you’re flying with to know exactly what to expect out of you.

Y’all do what you want. I’ve never had great luck in airplanes. I’ve had more emergencies in the past decade than most have in their whole careers. My experiences have shaped the way I fly and how I think about even the simple and mundane tasks we perform.

Turning the AP on with a stick shaker and wow switch disagreements sounds like a good way to die.

As long as the plane doesn’t push ala the MAX what are you doing pulling breakers that close to the ground?
 
the issue with the RNAV departures in CLT, at least in recurrent APDs eyes.... is that it is an RNAV departure (duh) with Headings.... people are flying it in NAV mode instead of HDG mode - track instead of heading in other words - that sometimes causes issues with parallel traffic

New FO on the Ejet. We’re told to fly a heading on departure out of YEG. Capt programmed a point /bearing / distance off the rwy. I piped up and said “you can’t do that, it’s a track not a heading.”
This is why some places are mandated to let the box fly, and not hand fly. Thanks to a group of people who don’t know the difference.

I had a guy try to manually program the expressway visual into LGA. We had two legs in there that day, first one I flew by looking out the window while he checked his work. Second one he flew his “approach.”

I stopped it before it got too scary, but it definitely wasn’t working. After telling him he was too low, he argued “but it says I’m right on the advisory vnav.”

“It might say that, but those apartment buildings feel differently.”

The one fun thing we get to do and guys try to program it away. Right up there with a guy last trip. “I’ve been off for a while and need all the legs. I feel rusty.” Total time hand flying each leg, MAYBE 45 seconds.
 
At YV we’re not allowed to handfly RNAV departures :/
It used to be that way at 9E too until 2016. Funny thing is after that is when we started having more RNAV deviations. Then more ATL flying came along and it really got ridiculous. I guess folks started hand flying more and paid less attention to what was in the box.

The magenta line strikes again. It’s always interesting watching people twist knobs like crazy rather than just flying the airplane. I rather work smarter than harder.

This is true.

A few years ago in CQ, one of the evaluations was handflying an RNAV departure.

“Why? This feels like a waste of time”

“Mandate from the FAA, apparently another carrier was having a lot of deviations...”
