I'm just going to leave this riiiiiiight here...

And I'm too busy operating the airplane and leading the crew to take time out for a Uniform Inspection. You wear a monocle, don't you? Come on, tell the truth. Say "HOOOOOOOGGGGAAAAAANNNNN!"
Shush. I’m sure ATN’s crews looked up to him as a shining paragon of Leadership, Airmanship, and Personal Appearance. Or as a crazy uncle off his meds again, I get the two confused.

I'm a firm believer in leading by example. If uniform stuff is important to you, dress to impress to your heart's delight. I agree that you should wear what the company tells you to wear, and I did when we flew passengers. But if someone else want's to, it's not really any of my business. We're all adults and nothing I'm going to be able to tell the other person is going to change their ways long term. There's much more important things to focus on.

I get it. Really, I do. But what makes me scratch my head is when airline X allows the leather jacket, or the north face, or the hat to be optional, and some folks act like airline X has collectively slapped the face of every professional pilot from the Brothers Wright on.

A good faith effort to wear a uniform properly shouldn't be asking much. In that, there shouldn't be an expectation for military creases and a solid gig line and spit-gloss shoes, but don't look like a bag of donuts either. Make a good faith effort to be generally presentable.

Personally, I think leather jackets are the way to go...but only for DC-9s and the related variations.

If you've ever watched that rugby scrum that occurs at the front when talking off or putting on coats, jackets, hats, etc, you'd fully understand.

My frustration is having uniforms that simply aren't practical. We have two jacket options that are allowed. One is a gigantic leather jacket that doesn't fit well and the other is a poor quality north face style jacket that has been back ordered since it was introduced.

I tried to be good and follow the rules, but lugging the leather jacket around Africa when it's 90 degrees isn't practical. It's too big to put away and I'm on the road for 17 days at a time. Packable black Columbia jacket FTW.

Oh, I do. I'd even wear one of those RIDICULOUS hats if the book said I had to. But I really don't have time to run around checking the other guy's hemline. I mean, nor would I want to, frankly.

You don’t really have to run around checking hemlines to see that the guy you’re flying with is wearing tennis shoes, or a windbreaker, or whatever. It’s not a major inconvenience to you to show some leadership and point out how that’s not what the uniform standards allow. Hell, you’re just sitting in cruise for hours at a time. It takes thirty seconds.

I guess my pilot group is a bunch of rebels but years ago guys just quit wearing the hats en masse and they finally did away with the "requirement" to wear it. I think it makes a difference if you're a freight dawg, too. We don't see the public while at work. Some guys do still wear the cap, and more power too them, but it should have been optional from beginning. I'm a big believer in carrying around as little as humanly possible between hotels. I like the leather jacket cause I can wear it at work, then take the stripes off, and wear it walking around outside on layovers. No need to carry around an extra jacket.

I was thinking about that kind of thing earlier this trip. We don’t have a ton of closet space so a lot of the time uniform shirts get hung on a section of interior trim just before you get to the bunkers. Slowly the signs that say “please don’t” are being replaced by metal reinforcement of that edge so the clothes hanger doesn’t damage the trim.

Slowly we get our way.

As for the leather jacket, i agreed with you in theory until I started seeing multiple seasons each trip. It’s just too much to lug around.

Some places actually require the captain to do that exact job. From our FOM:

“The captain is responsible for ensuring the flight deck crew is in compliance with *SJI’s* appearance standards”

Pretty cut and dried.

What happens to a Capt whose FO is found by someone or reported to not be in compliance?

Yeah wait, are you going to get in trouble for what your F/O is wearing? If the answer is "no", why do you care?

Same here, except the responsibility extends to the cabin crew as well.

I once refused to leave the FBO to airline home with a young FO that walked in wearing the ragged out white t-shirt he had on under his uniform shirt the whole trip. That was more just teaching the kid how to act like an adult rather than being a good captain.
Ended up loaning him a shirt.
