AAL Scheduling glitch

Not a real big fan of how APA handled this one and made it so public and spread a global panic. They should've sat back after the company didn't talk to them and say "I Guess they've got it figured out". And press on, and when the opentime sat there day after day with the offer of 1.5X pay, then let the company come to the union and say, "help us fill this time".

I agree with @Kingairer that APA could've handled this better. Some in the public already tend to believe we're all overpaid princesses so the perception of pilots just saying 'too bad so sad' to holiday passengers isn't good PR.
I made the mistake of wading into comments on this story at NPR, and erm, well, yeah. Don't try to explain stuff to landsmen.

(1) yes, 75 hours is a "full" month
(2) yes, it's normal to rewrite your schedule entirely

(etc)

The amount of open time over the holidays is insane. They are acrewed until they offer 3-400% pay

I'm on reserve over the holidays, so I'm already shopping for an industrial sized tub of lube. If I was one of the pilots who was able to drop all their holiday trips, no amount of money would get me back to work. I'm sure some will bite on 150%, and 300% would take care of most of the problem, though.

Time for the company to own this, and do what they have to do to fix it.

Ummmmm. What airline you work for again?? Because mine would say:

(1) 94 hours a month
(2) cannot even drop a local
Well, yeah.

101:42 this month including an unpaid fatigue call ([expletive]), 94 next month. One local, but I don't wanna drop it.

I bid reserve to have Xmas off. I put my golden days there so they can’t touch me no matter what.

Reminds of a Dave Attell comedy line "Dude, you shoulda hung out man, just after you left...."
Dude you shoulda bid a line man!

Now that American pilots are experiencing the wonders that are AOS (as far as I know, that is - haven't paid attention tbqh), and having been <50% in a category with said PBS for about a year until just recently, being on reserve is a better gig.

(in b4 "OMG you can't compare your regional to this")

Actually reserve is pretty sweet too.

If I had my wish I wouldn't bid a line in my entire career, I really like reserve at this level. At a commuter it blows unless you're over staffed which pretty much only happened for a few months in my whole time there, which was right before they furloughed.

I flew 740 hours a year at my commuter, almost like clockwork, every year I was there. If I fly 200 now that is too much.

I actually enjoyed reserve at my regional until our staffing REALLY went south circa July or so.

We have multiple opportunities to trade and modify our schedules throughout the month, so what you get w PBS doesn’t look anything like what you end up with. But to each his own, I just never feel comfortable w reserve.

Do you live in base? Short call in base is less work than a part time job. I’m too nervous of not waking up to a phone call in the middle of the night to do long call. I get that would be a rare occasion but still.
